NATIONAL HARBOR, MD. — President Trump falsely claimed during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Friday that lines to get in stretched back “six blocks.”

It was a statement at odds with the quiet scene outside the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center where CPAC is taking place.

There were no lines getting into the Gaylord within the hour before Trump began speaking Friday morning.

"There are lines that go back six blocks. I tell you that because you won’t read about it," Trump said during his address.

What they read later will serve to reinforce their belief that the news media lies and creates fake news.

His followers are already preconditioned to believe him. They have been conditioned to disbelieve fact checking that doesn't agree with what they hear about their leadership for decades now. But by hammering into them, repeatedly, the idea that the news media is faking its reporting, those beliefs are immovable and unchangeable. They won't, literally will not, believe what the legitimate news media says if it contradicts what Trump says.

No amount of proof will work. In fact, presenting them with actual proof of the actual truth will only serve to make them disbelieve it more. I doubt they'd believe it if it came from Rush Limbaugh and Fox News at this point.

This is a very dangerous place to be in history. If he chooses, Trump can whip his followers into a frenzy not seen since Nazi Germany immediately prior to WWII.

If Trump tells his people something is fake, it's fake. If he tells them someone's an enemy of the people, they're the enemy. If Trump tells them to attack...

We aren't yet to that last part. However, I am absolutely certain that if we get there, no amount of Constitution or established law will prevent his most obedient adherents from taking action.

Thank God Trump lacks Obama's charisma. The lack of that trait is the only thing keeping it from being a truly national movement... and I don't know if it's enough.
