Cory Booker Joins Bernie Sanders In Backing Drug Re-Importation Bill

Source: Huffington Post

From a policy angle, Booker has previously been open to the idea of re-importing drugs from Canada and even voted that same night for a measure aimed at lowering drug costs. But politically, activists have long considered him to be a reliable ally of Big Pharma, which is a dominant industry in New Jersey. Thus, his break with the industry at a public event with Sanders is meaningful politically. If the goal of the resistance has been to stiffen the spines of Democrats, it’s working.

Of course, there is no policy without politics. If and when Democrats gain control of government, they’ll be under tremendous pressure from their base to follow through on their promise and do something about soaring drug costs.

The drug industry is powerful in Pennsylvania, too, and Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) joined Booker on that late-night vote in January. Since then, resistance in Pennsylvania has been fierce, with activists gathering every Tuesday to pressure lawmakers to oppose the Republican corporate agenda. Casey has not been immune and he faces re-election in 2018 in a state that Trump won with an upset victory. He, too, will join Booker and Sanders on Tuesday in announcing his backing of the bill.

Booker and Casey said they were able to add robust safety provisions to the measure, which won over their support.

While it may be good for Booker to back the drug bill, voting against your home State's industry can also back fire.

which he stated didn't have enough safeguards in it.

This is a full bill, which is far more comprehensive, which has apparently addressed the issues that he had concerns about.

Is that clearer?

Because if there is no Republican support, it doesn't matter a damn what Booker or anyone else supports.

And if he is so concerned about safety, why did he vote in December to lower safety standards at the FDA, a bill the pharma lobby has been pushing forever?

Anything connecting for you?

OP connected the dots: said his support for this may cost him in NJ, because of Big Pharma influence there. it's almost like winning elections is more important than anything.

If you want to come here to rag on Booker, just own it.

I knew that there was a full bill (not just a symbolic, empty amendment) that had been advanced on prescription drug costs, however, it didn't have Sanders name on it, so there are many that were clueless as to its existence. I guess if Sanders isn't out front taking credit, then why bother?

If Booker doesn't march lockstep with the new manifesto that determines if you are either a "progressive" or "corporate-owned scum" then just say so.

Let perfect be the enemy of the good - and while you're at it, clean up the dumps you take in the house, because stinking up the place doesn't help you or your message.

In the meantime, why don't you take a look at the the leader you are disgusted with:

I just don't bother putting all the facts I have in every single post.

In January Booker voted for an amendment with those higher safety standards he was so concerned about; it failed on a party-line vote. Then he voted against the Klobachar amendment, which had an excellent chance of passing since 12 Republicans voted in favor. But 13 Democrats voted against, including both both from NJ and others who get a lot of money from Big Pharma.

If you want to come here to rag on me just own it.

Or perhaps not.

Ragging on every politician that doesn't walk lockstep with Sanders as "corporate shills" (even after they do) makes you feel better.

I get it. But it doesn't really accomplish anything, does it? Maybe gets your posts hidden. Is that a badge of honor for you too?
