Oprah Is Thinking Maybe She *Could* Run For President
Source: Huffington Post
Oprah Winfrey never thought someone from a show business background with no political experience could rise to the office of POTUS, but here we are. And shes apparently not ruling out a run of her own.
The media queen sat down for an interview on the Season 2 premiere of The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations on Bloomberg Television, and revealed shed maybe consider running for president. Rubenstein wondered if Oprah could be the one to break the glass ceiling and be elected the first female president of the United States.
The 63-year-old mogul replied, I never considered the question even a possibility. I just thought, Oh. I thought, Oh, gee, I dont have the experience. I dont know enough. And now Im thinking, Oh.
In January, Oprah brushed off the idea, telling Jimmy Kimmel, Never! No, its not my thing. But her mind might be changing.
She would seemingly have Michael Moores vote. The director said the Democrats need to run a beloved candidate. Democrats would be better off if they ran Oprah [Winfrey] or Tom Hanks, Moore told CNN after Hillary Clintons loss in November. Why dont we run beloved people? We have so many of them. The Republicans do this they run [Ronald] Reagan and the Terminator [Arnold Schwarzenegger] and other people. Why dont we run somebody that the American people love and are really drawn to, and that are smart and have good politics and all that?

She is way too susceptible. Remember when she was going to give up beef? Her fad diets? More to the point, weren't there some real problems associated with that academy she founded in Africa?

(20,043 posts)Celebrities have endorsed weight loss programs before. No biggie. But this time is a bit different. Oprah isn't just a paid endorser, she bought a 10% stake in Weight Watchers in 2015. She's up about $18 million so far.

(56,827 posts)People thought he was cool because he was an action movie star and a larger than life figure, but beloved? Nah. He has charisma, though, just like Obama has charisma and Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan had charisma.
Since the election, I have been saying that at the presidential level, the more charismatic candidate always wins.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan was the smooth and optimistic former actor, one of the most charismatic Republicans of the 20th century. Jimmy Carter, while smart and extremely competent, was portrayed as stiff and indecisive. Reagan wins big.
1984, Reagan swamps Walter Mondale, a smart and competent, but low charisma candidate.
1988 featured two low charisma candidates, but Mike Dukakis took blandness to epic levels. Bush wins on Reagans coattails.
1992 featured the young and charismatic Bill Clinton against low charisma George HW Bush. Clinton wins handily.
1996 was Clinton again versus stern and serious Bob Dole. Clinton wins handily again.
2000 featured down home regular guy George W. Bush and out of touch and overly serious elitist Al Gore. Bush ekes out a win.
2004 featured Bush again against smart and competent but bland John Kerry. Bush wins.
2008 was young and charismatic Barack Obama against stern and serious John McCain. Obama wins.
2012 was Obama again versus the elitist and out of touch Mitt Romney
2016 was Hillary Clinton very smart and competent, but not the most exciting person. Donald Trump was a train wreck, but he had that smarmy con-man charisma that sucked up all the media attention. Trump ekes out a win.

(765 posts)Given Moore's history of backing destructive losers in presidential politics, why on earth should anyone listen to him? IMO he's helped two of the worst administrations gain power over the last 20 years. I have nothing against Oprah, but Moore has literally no credibility with me on this subject.

(14,154 posts)The President, can be a celebrity figurehead....as long as they surround themselves with good smart experienced advisors. And furthermore, they remain humble and accept that advice.
And if celebrity is the only thing that will transcend party lines in advancing towards a more egalitarian democratic country, with a Democratic administration, then why not?
Of course we'd rather have an intelligent well-spoken leader such as Obama, Bill Clinton, who have experience in government, but Democrats have been behind the eightball in thinking that they are living in some Pleastantville world and all they have to do is calmly explain their positions, and they can win over the Fox News addicts in middle America who have been brainwashed for years, decades, against trusting any establishment Democrat politician.
