New York's Catholic Church seeks $100 million loan to pay priest victims

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York is seeking permission for a $100 million mortgage on some of its valuable Manhattan property to fund its compensation program for people sexually abused by its priests, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
The archdiocese said last October it would compensate people who had accused priests of abusing them as children, including those prevented by statutes of limitations from filing civil lawsuits. It said at the time it would seek loans to fund the payouts, which are being decided by two independent arbitrators.
On Monday, the archdiocese filed a petition in New York state court in Manhattan seeking approval for a one-year mortgage from JPMorgan Chase on land it owns behind St. Patricks Cathedral; the Lotte New York Palace hotel is located on the site. The petition was necessary under a New York law governing the use of church property, Joseph Zwilling, an archdiocese spokesman, said in a telephone interview.
Because we have begun the process of paying out the compensation to victims, the archdiocese has taken this short-term loan to cover the payments, Zwilling said.

I'm not aware that they do this, correct me if I'm wrong. Calling everything one doesn't like or agree with fake is what the real fake news site want people to do to legitimize themselves.

(3,911 posts)The issue was the veracity of the news, which as far as I can tell pretty much lined up with the original source.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)... in my opinion. Of course it's going to "line-up" with the original source when they COPY IT. Meanwhile the original writer and news organization is cheated out of any revenue they would have received if readers has visited the original site, instead of an "aggregate" site.
It's not whether they do or not, it's whether it's right or not. I don't believe it's right.

We are paid subscribers of Reuters and all the other sources you see on our site -- just like the NYT, WaPo, HuffPo, etc. pay for subscriptions to Reuters, AP, The Guardian, AFP and other wire services and print their stories.

Their ad-filled and java-heavy pages bring my browser to a screeching halt. I loathe seeing links to their "clearing house" site.

Even if "legal", it's shady and deceptive. It makes legitimate stories (and sources) look cheap. And it gives EVEN WORSE and EVEN MORE QUESTIONABLE sources look slightly legit... and I definitely don't mean that as a compliment.

(6,017 posts)- They are the most wealthy organization on the planet.
- They own the most real estate.
- Here in America their finances don't have to be reported to the IRS at all.
- They own 1 in 6 hospital beds here & control the care given based on religion not medicine.
- They have had Dioceses move money around & declare bankruptcy to avoid paying their victims.
- In 2002 they brought on Dr. Paul McHugh as their "science advisor", who had previously run John Money's clinic that taught child molesters how to avoid criminal prosecution.
- They have been endorsing candidates from the pulpit (and newspapers, and YouTube) since 2008, a violation of the Johnson Act. Specifically, what they've said is if you vote for X, your soul will burn in hell forever.

Level the playing field.
