Top Democrats call for Sessions resignation after bombshell report he lied about Russian contacts

Source: Raw Story

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) on Wednesday called for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign after reporters that he spoke with Russian ambassador Sergery Kislyak twice during the 2016 presidential campaign, despite testifying under oath that he did not have communications with the Russians.

“When Senator Sessions testified under oath that ‘I did not have communications with the Russians,’ his statement was demonstrably false, yet he let it stand for weeks,” Cummings said in a statement. “He continued to let it stand even as he watched the President tell the entire nation he didn’t know anything about anyone advising his campaign talking to the Russians.”

House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) also called for Sessions’ resignation, releasing a statement insisting Attorney General “Sessions is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who Wednesday revealed that the House Intelligence Committee will officially investigate the Trump campaign’s contact with Russian officials, said it’s “essential” that Session recuse himself from any investigation into the president’s ties to the Kremlin.

I know Dump won't ask him to; he's too useful to him, and probably has important Russian connections. Lying to Congress on a VERY important, relevant subject in his confirmation hearings should be an automatic disqualifier.

A spokeswoman for Sessions confirmed that the meetings took place, but provided a statement from the attorney general saying they were not related to the election campaign.

“I never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign,” Sessions’ statement said.

That ought to deflect any criticism, right Condi?

14. Nancy Pelosi's official statement:
Thu Mar 2, 2017, 01:20 AM
Mar 2017
Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearing before the Senate. Under penalty of perjury, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee, ‘I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.’ We now know that statement is false.

Attorney General Sessions has never had the credibility to oversee the FBI investigation of senior Trump officials’ ties to the Russians. That is why Democrats have consistently called for Sessions to recuse himself from any oversight of the investigation.

Now, after lying under oath to Congress about his own communications with the Russians, the Attorney General must resign. Sessions is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country and must resign. There must be an independent, bipartisan, outside commission to investigate the Trump political, personal and financial connections to the Russians.

If Democrats led at least one house of Congress it might be different, but they don't. Sessions is part of the DNA of the Trump Administration. Republicans can't take either of them down until they have passed enough of their radical agenda under Trump's signature, under a shell appearance of normality before the real turmoil begins.

I would be glad to see Sessions go for any reason since he can't be trusted on civil rights and any number of issues, but they are drawing funny lines on lying. There are also any number of CEO's who have lied to Congress about the health risks of tobacco, climate change, and what they were telling their clients about mortgage backed derivatives.
