Cruz Calls Sessions' Meeting With Russian Ambassador A 'Nothing Burger'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ALLEGRA KIRKLAND Published MARCH 2, 2017, 9:33 AM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Wednesday called Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ two meetings with the Russian ambassador during the 2016 campaign a “nothing burger,” breaking with several senior Republican leaders.

“What we are seeing is a lot of political theater,” Cruz said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The Texas senator said that Sessions’ meetings with ambassador Sergey Kislyak, which he did not disclose during his confirmation hearings and were first reported by the Washington Post Wednesday night, were a routine part of serving in Congress.

“This morning, everyone is in high dudgeon about the meeting,” Cruz said. “The underlying meeting is a nothing burger. It's what senators do every day. Meeting with foreign ambassadors, that's part of the job.”

And the dems had a suspicious relationship with the Russians, and it was revealed that during the campaign their atty general nominee denied having talked to any russkies and then found to have been fibbing? There'd be an explosion, led by the lying sacks on FOX. That's all we'd hear for years. But this is different - these are republicans, so it's OK.

"Cruz disputed that characterization, saying Sessions could have “been more clear” in his comments, but was speaking in his capacity as a senator during the testimony, not as a surrogate for the Trump campaign."

In response to Senator Franken's question, Sessions answered: "I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians."

Sessions was specifically speaking as a surrogate. He said so himself.

In fact, he broke the first rule of lawyerin'...NEVER OFFER INFORMATION!

So, we have either an idiot or a corrupt person as the AG. More likely, both.

Why not just admit it, explain it is "routine" for such meetings to occur and be done with it?? Wouldn't his fellow Senators understand this, provided it was true? Or is it more likely that it isn't routine and it raises more questions to WHAT they discussed?

Sessions rolled the dice on this one that A. He'd never be caught. Or B. If caught just deny, deny, deny. He will go down with this ship of fools, caught up in his own importance, thinking he can lie his way out of it. The rats will turn on each other in the end. But for now, the big story is how long are they willing to lie and deny? How long before the tipping point arrives when even the Repubs know that strategy won't hold back the flood gates?

I think we are so close to the time when this breaks wide open. I can imagine the panic in the White House is palpable as they scramble to come up with distractions and diversions. I think the news organizations are not going to be so easily diverted at this point, especially after the beatings they've taken from tRump lately. So let's make sure we give them proper accolades when they keep the Russian connection stories alive and thriving.

tRump won't give up easily, but it appears his Russian backers are losing their enthusiasm for their Orange Comrade. So he may be on his own for this turn of events. Let's make sure we turn up the heat and watch him melt under the scrutiny.
