White House proposes steep budget cut to leading climate science agency

Source: Washington Post

The Trump administration is seeking to slash one of the government’s premier climate science agencies by 17 percent, delivering steep cuts to research funding and satellite programs, according to a four-page budget memo obtained by The Washington Post.

The proposed cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would also eliminate funding for a variety of smaller programs including external research, coastal management, estuary reserves and “coastal resilience,” which seeks to bolster the ability of coastal areas to withstand major storms and rising seas.

NOAA is part of the Commerce Department budget, which would be hit by an overall 18 percent reduction from its current funding level.

OMB also asked the Commerce Department to provide information about how much it would cost to lay off employees, while saying those employees who do remain with the department should get a 1.9 percent pay increase in January 2018. It requested estimates for terminating leases and government “property disposal.”

Because these agencies fund state environmental agencies through grants and partnerships, as well as a variety of interstate management groups (like the fishery management commissions, etc), those agencies (even in blue states) will shed thousands of jobs and at universities as well. Funding for STEM scholarships and grant money for post-graduates.

That piece of shit has no idea what he is doing. He will ruin the environment and set back wildlife and fisheries management to a point where these species may NEVER recover.

It's like a swath of destruction. Has anyone started out their term with such a scorched earth policy?

This is exactly what a minority of voters wanted, so they get it. It's the American Way.

The only hope is the Filibuster, I suppose.

Basically, America is throwing in the towel on any notion of addressing ACC. It's a goddamn tragedy. Sorry, future generations, the generation that's just about to die DGAF.

I know, I know. But a lot of these funds go to coastal states, including those in the south.

Otherwise we can just hope the rest of the world keeps going on climate science. Because we won't be.

No reason to waste money on nonsense like "hurricane monitoring". I mean, that's almost as stupid as "volcano monitoring".
Galveston, Florida and New Orleans will be fine.

Not to neglect that the Pentagon deems Global Climate Change is a National Security Threat.
