Elizabeth Warren demands Jeff Sessions respect state marijuana law
Source: Fox
A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday, urging their former colleague not to undo a 2013 policy permitting states to set their own recreational marijuana regulations.
Led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the push is a response to recent mixed messages from the Trump administration on whether it will enforce federal law which still bars recreational marijuana use, or leave the decision to implement the federal policy to the states.
Sessions, speaking to the National Association of Attorneys General on Tuesday, had said he was dubious about marijuana. Less than a week before, at a White House briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer cautioned that greater enforcement of the federal statute could come and later likened recreational pot use to the opioid addiction crisis happening across the country.
For some senators, however, the possibility of greater enforcement signals an intrusion into states rights in a way that is concerning.

(12,541 posts)works for Trump's grand scheme. He gets more private prisons that will send bribes to his off shore money laundry accounts. It also lowers unemployment with all the new prison jobs and prisoners don't count as unemployed. In the demented mind of Donald Trump locking up innocent people based on a law written to protect the profits of William Randolph Hearst who had a monopoly on wood based newsprint that could be made much cheaper with hemp. Hemp was Hearst's only competition.
Hearst created the cannabis scare through his media dominance. The criminalizing of cannabis is rooted in unwarranted fear and superstition.
The fact that law enforcement could use it as a legal cudgel against minorities worked hand in hand with Jim Crow laws.
So how many more victims of a crooked system do we want to make suffer? That is the root of Sessions' jihad against legal reefer.

"take care" that all federal laws are enforced. If the President can decide not to enforce
federal marijuana law why couldn't they just do the same about the ACA, or voting rights laws, or...
It's a pity Democrats didn't nominate someone willing to take the lead on this issue, Trump might
not be President and maybe Congress could fix this.
