White House Strikes at CBO Over GOP's Obamacare Replacement
Source: U.S. News & World Report
The White House began casting doubts on the Congressional Budget Office's ability to accurately score House GOP legislation designed to repeal Obamacare, launching a preemptive shot Wednesday against the nonpartisan agency tasked with analyzing the economic impact of the replacement effort.
The CBO has begun analyzing the American Health Care Act, and Republican lawmakers are hoping to be provided with an estimate by the end of this week. But White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the CBO's past track record in forecasting the cost and coverage of the Affordable Care Act has undermined its authority.
"If you're looking at the CBO for accuracy, you're looking at the wrong place," Spicer said. "Look at what the CBO's record is on Obamacare. It's vastly off. They're way off in terms of the millions."
While the CBO projected four years ago that 24 million Americans would enroll in Obamacare through its exchanges by 2016, the actual number only totaled 11 million by last August. Obama administration officials explained away the gaping discrepancy by saying that analysts mistakenly thought employers would direct their workers to enroll in the exchanges, which allow those without coverage to buy government-subsidized insurance, instead of continuing to provide health care themselves.

How long before Trump goes on a Fake News tirade directed at the CBO? Perhaps Republicans will threaten to simply dissolve the office and replace it with Breitbart/Fox News staffers.

CEO syndrome.
And whatever the flaws of accountants, if you don't trust them with numbers,
who do you trust? Where do you turn? Numbers. Math. Reality.

(14,563 posts)This is a complete repeat of Ws years, as a lot of this is.
Most of the shit they pulled then, including Medicare pare D, CBO showed it to be a disaster, but they dismissed the CBO and plowed ahead anyways.
The problem is that this country NEVER holds them accountable ... AND, THEY KNOW IT.
I always felt their margin was so big in the House that this hot mess was going to pass easily there.
The Senate is the last line of defense, and you would think that at least three of them would do the right thing, but ... The dogma is so strong now, I can't see how any pol, much less a republican, would have the courage to stand up and be seen as one of two or three people who held off something that their insane party so desperately wants.
My money is on us being fucked.

(14,563 posts)I fully expect if they don't take a beating this fall in the municipal elections, that they will either straight up shut down the CBO, or just skip it totally moving forward. Possibly even before then. AGAIN, because the PEOPLE enable their fascism.

That kind of verbiage is why I cannot watch/listen/read anymore outside of shows like Daily Show & Colbert & Oliver ... even NPR does their stories like this ... let alone AP and many others ... this is just 'how they talk' when it comes to Obama/Dems ...
CBO is absolutely at risk.

He probably was screaming that his creditors had the numbers wrong as the repo men carried him out in his office chair.
