UN says world faces largest humanitarian crisis since 1945

Source: Associated Press

Fri., March 10, 2017

The world faces the largest humanitarian crisis since the United Nations was founded in 1945 with more than 20 million people in four countries facing starvation and famine, the U.N. humanitarian chief said Friday.

Stephen O’Brien told the U.N. Security Council that “without collective and co-ordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death” and “many more will suffer and die from disease.”

He urged an immediate injection of funds for Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and northeast Nigeria plus safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid “to avert a catastrophe.”

“To be precise,” O’Brien said, “we need $4.4 billion by July.”

who are making it impossible to get aid into Yemen:

Donald Trump's State Department approves Saudi Arabia weapons sales blocked by Barack Obama

A multi-million dollar technology for Riyadh was blocked by the former President during the final months of his administration over human rights concerns.

Saudi Arabia is leading a mostly Arab coalition targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen with air strikes.
...
Last year, Mr Obama's administration approved a $1.15bn (£921m) deal for the sale of tanks and armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia.
...
However, in his final months in office, Mr Obama decided to halt the current deal on precision-guided military technology.

The United Nations High Commission on Refugees. We are so privileged in this country. Despite the nutjob in the WH, we as individuals need to do our part to help folks within our own country, as well as around the world.
