Dem. Ranking Members: CBO Shows GOP Plan Is 'A Major Step Backwards'

The top Democrats on both House committees responsible for Republicans Obamacare replacement plan criticized that plan on Monday, after the Congressional Budget Office estimated 24 million people would lose health care coverage by 2026 as a result of the bill.
Reps. Richard Neal (D-MA) and Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ), the ranking members of the Ways and Means Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee, respectively, condemned the American Health Care Act in a [link:https://democrats-waysandmeans.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/neal-pallone-statement-cbo-report-house-gop-health-care-repeal-billjoint statement] Monday afternoon.
Todays CBO report now confirms what we already knew: despite promises that everyone would be covered and no one would be worse off, this Republican bill would rip away health insurance from 24 million Americans over the next decade and ask millions to pay more for less coverage, the pair wrote. Despite warnings from independent experts like CBO and others, Republicans continue to recklessly jam this bill through Congress without so much as a single hearing on what effects their plan will have on middle-class families."
"This report also reaffirms that the Republican plan does absolutely nothing to control costs or protect consumers. Instead, it guts Medicaid, raises costs on older Americans, and pulls billions of dollars from Medicare, all in order to pay for tax cuts for the rich.

Schumer: CBO Report on GOP Health Plan Shows 'Serious Harm' To Families
By MATT SHUHAM Published MARCH 13, 2017, 5:05 PM EDT
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Monday that a Congressional Budget Office report on Republicans proposed Obamacare replacement plan made it clear that TrumpCare will cause serious harm to millions of American families.
The CBO estimated Monday that the bill would result in 14 million fewer people having health insurance in 2018, versus keeping the Affordable Care Act, and 24 million fewer people by 2026.
The CBO's estimate makes clear that TrumpCare will cause serious harm to millions of American families, Schumer said in a statement. Tens of millions will lose their coverage, and millions more, particularly seniors, will have to pay more for health care. The CBO score shows just how empty the president's promises, that everyone will be covered and costs will go down, have been. This should be a looming stop sign for the Republicans repeal effort.
The CBO estimated the coverage losses were the result of the loss of the Obamacare mandate, the loss of subsidies to buy insurance on the individual market in favor of smaller tax credits, and the freeze of the Medicaid expansion authorized by the current law, among other things.

(43,044 posts)our democracy should not be talking about term limits or recalls or amendments or gerrymandering
With instant communications and limitless energy, our world moves so much faster than it did in 1787.
I think we should be talking about ONE year election cycles, THREE years for Senators, TWO years for
President with a limit of 4 or 5 terms .... All these professional political class people who are front men
for the wealthy in every country and not for the little people of the USA, can do so much MORE damage
to our world and society and laws and people than they could when the pace of life was slower.
Kick them out every year. Make them do things that are right for the long term interest of society.
They run for reelection every day anyway, why not double our chances at bagging one with a defeat
at the polls?
