Oklahoma Senator under investigation for incident at motel with teen boy

Source: KFOR New Channel 4

MOORE, Okla. - Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey is under investigation for an incident at a motel with a teenage boy.

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn told NewsChannel 4 the boy is 16 or 17, and that is the age of consent in Oklahoma.

Shortey is 35.

The incident took place at a Super 8 in Moore.

From oksenate.gov:
A member of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Tribe, Senator Ralph Shortey was born in Casper, Wyoming. He spent part of his childhood on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in Grass Mountain, South Dakota before moving to Oklahoma City where he attended Moore Public Schools. Shortey graduated from West Moore High School in 2000, and following graduation he attended Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City in preparation for mission work in Uganda. In 2002, Ralph married his high school sweetheart, Jennifer and continues to make his home in south Oklahoma City with their two children, Kaitlyn and Elena. With a growing family, Shortey decided against pursuing mission work and instead entered the oil and gas industry, working as a production consultant. In 2010 Shortey, a long-time political volunteer, decided to run for the Senate District 44 seat. In addition to serving in the Oklahoma State Senate, he is currently pursuing a degree in finance and economics. Senator Shortey’ s priorities in the Legislature include personal liberty, fighting illegal immigration and strengthening public safety in Oklahoma.

He "was found with a teenage boy in a motel in the town of Moore on the night of March 9, police say"

It is reported that underneath the now deleted Mar 10th Facebook post of the pic of him with Trump Jr, he posted
http://heavy.com/news/2017/03/oklahoma-republican-ralph-shortey-teenage-boy/
"Was honored to have lunch today with Donald Trump Jr. and some very influential and passionate business leaders in our state."
... which was the day after the incident with the boy at the motel.

In defense of Trump Jr, which I'm not eager to do, I doubt he was aware of what had gone on hours before with the boy & police. It could be a gigantic fake news story if that is not true

Thu Mar 16, 2017, 12:37 AM
Mar 2017

From colorlines.com, May 28, 2013:
Senator Ralph Shortey (R-Ok.) summed up some up the backlash, telling CNN that Latinos "are not assimilating and enriching the culture of Oklahoma. They are invading the culture...Oklahoma is not the melting pot...(Latinos are) not doing their culture any favors when it's shoved into Oklahomans' faces."

From Feministing, January 2012:
A Republican state senator from Oklahoma City introduced a bill Tuesday that would ban the use of aborted human fetuses in food, despite conceding that he’s unaware of any company using such a practice. Freshman Sen. Ralph Shortey said his own Internet research led him to believe such a ban is necessary and prompted him to offer the bill aimed at raising “public awareness” and giving an “ultimatum to companies” that might consider such a policy.

And from the DallasVoice, same year:
One bill he filed in the last session of the Legislature would have denied Oklahoma citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born in the state. Exactly what is “Oklahoma citizenship”? Possibly no Oklahoma passports would be issued to them. However, the U.S. Constitution grants U.S. citizenship to anyone born in this country. Can you be a U.S. citizen in only 49 states? Well, maybe. After all, you can be legally married in some and can cross a state line and suddenly not be married.

And here’s a big surprise — Shortey is a “birther.” In another piece of failed legislation, a presidential candidate would have to provide proof of citizenship to be placed on an Oklahoma primary ballot.

He also introduced bills to eliminate the Court of Criminal Appeals, to confiscate the cars and homes of illegal immigrants, and to allow legislators to carry firearms anywhere in the state, including on the floor of the Senate and House.

From the Duncanbanner, February 2017:
Voters at the time overwhelmingly approved a pair of state questions that would institute those reforms. State Question 780 reclassified certain non-violent drug and theft offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, in an effort to reduce the number of people locked up in prison. A companion piece, State Question 781, sends any savings to counties to pay for rehabilitation programs. Many law enforcement officers and prosecutors didn’t favor the changes, and the pros and cons were debated throughout the campaign. Now, state lawmakers have introduced several bills that would change parts of the laws. One legislator, state Sen. Ralph Shortey, R-Oklahoma City, drew a lot of criticism because of two bills he introduced. They would, if approved by the Legislature as is, undo every change made in the the state questions approved by voters.

From the HeraldCurrier last week:
(on his bill allowing property owners to shoot down drones) "It doesn't matter how you damage that thing," Shortey said. "As a private citizen, you have a reasonable expectation of privacy above your property"

Stephen McKeever serves as chairman of the governor's Unmanned Aerial Systems Council, which opposes the legislation. He said drones are classified as an aircraft and that it's against federal law to shoot down an aircraft. "So, the bill opens itself up to the state pre-emption of federal law," McKeever said. McKeever argued that the bill encourages the discharge of a weapon within a residential area, which against state law.

Thu Mar 16, 2017, 03:27 PM

For a start, which is it? Is he 16, or is he 17? And which of those two is the age of consent? If "that" means "the second one I just mentioned", then there's no problem with the age of consent. And how come the District Attorney is unable to say how old the boy is? Shouldn't that be something fundamental he determines before talking to the media?

The 'nondoc' link says there are "prostitution-related charges". But the first article doesn't mention prostitution at all.
