Quit stalking immigrants at California courthouses, chief justice tells ICE

Source: Sacramento Bee

California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye on Thursday told federal immigration officials to stop “stalking undocumented immigrants” at California courthouses.

Cantil-Sakauye said she was “deeply concerned” that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are apparently seeking out undocumented immigrants for deportation at courthouses and courtrooms from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

“Courthouses should not be used as bait in the necessary enforcement of our country’s immigration laws,” she said in a letter sent to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on Thursday. “Enforcement policies that include stalking courthouses and arresting undocumented immigrants, the vast majority of whom pose no risk to public safety, are neither safe nor fair. They not only compromise our core value of fairness but they undermine the judiciary’s ability to provide equal access to justice. I respectfully request that you refrain from this sort of enforcement in California's courthouses.”

Since January, Cantil-Sakauye has received several reports from lower court judges, private attorneys and Legal Aid lawyers, that U.S. immigration agents are arresting people after court proceedings, said Cathal Conneely, a public information officer for the Judicial Council of California.

3. A perfect catch-22, from the Fascists perspective ...

Immigrants start to fear the courthouse, next thing you know, they're not showing up to court for their parking and traffic tickets and jaywalking and tickets for bad tags ... NOW ... they've committed a more serious crime ... failure to pay/appear. Now the fascists can start making a more socially acceptable 'case' that these are 'scofflaws' and potentially dangerous.

It's fucking genius if you really think about it, Walter ...

Fascist fucking dicks.

Just wait until the full brunt of 'life without immigrants' begins to be felt in supermarkets around the US ... and in the yards that aren't getting cleaned, and the roughly 1000 other jobs that currently only immigrants are willing to do ... aren't getting done.

Or they're getting done by dumbass Drumpf voters who didn't realize 'golly gee, I actually really DO rely on the federal government to keep my dumb ass alive ... guess I gotta go blow some leaves, or pick some apples, or bale me some cotton, or slaughter some pigs, or maybe do some roofing in August in Arizona ... otherwise my family will starve, or maybe die from lack of healthcare ... but hey ... at least them LIBS is mad and we got them BROWNSKINS right outta here, amirite fellow Murkins? The Rich got their TAX BREAKS TOO ... WOOOHOOOO! WE WON!!!"

Wait, what am I saying ... to the dumb-fuck mouth-breathers of the right, despite the GOP controlling all of government, it'll still all be the Mexicans and Mooslims and Clintons and Obama's fault ... I forgot for a second how FUCKING GULLIBLE the people we're dealing with here ... actually are.

4. They want to intimidate people and discourage them from going to court

and Trump up some other excuses to claim that normal people who pose no risk to public safety are somehow dangerous criminals

They want the American people to mentally equate immigrants with drug dealers and rapists.

9. One of the main problems for a (any) country with a large group of residents considered illegal

People who are afraid of being deported are reluctant to contact either courts or the police. This means they have no recourse when they are victimized, but it also means that when they witness a crime against someone else they are unlikely to report it. So if a neighbor has "illegal" domestic staff, and they notice someone breaking into your house, they're not likely to pick up the phone and call 911 about it. Even if they see somebody shoot you or kidnap your child, they are unlikely to report it, remaining silent out of fear for their own safety.

The current situation suits the owners - sorry, bosses - because it leaves them free to intimidate and exploit workers. They don't want to deport the illegals en masse. It's obvious that doing so would devastate parts of the US economy. Their real goal seems to be to enhance their ability to intimidate and exploit. Get rid of a few so the rest will be more easily subjugated. What ordinary citizens fail to notice is the serious knock-on effects for everyone else in the society when witnesses are afraid to report crimes, or the enormous undermining of our longstanding values and morals when human life is devalued and mistreatment of one's fellow human beings becomes accepted and commonplace as long as the victims are members of the subjugated group.

As a country we need to accept the fact that this large group of people are permanent residents and valuable contributors, and we need to pass legislation to regularize their status and remove the shadow of perpetual fear.

in my opinion.
