Stephen Hawking: I don't feel welcome in Trump's America

Source: Newsweek

20 MAR 2017 AT 07:41 ET

Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, has said he no longer feels welcome in the United States under Donald Trump’s administration.

“I would like to visit again and to talk to other scientists, but I fear that I may not be welcome,” Hawking said Monday in an interview on U.K. TV show Good Morning Britain.

“Trump was elected by people who felt disenfranchised by the governing elite in a revolt against globalization,” he added. “His priority will be to satisfy his electorate, who are neither liberal nor that well informed.”

In particular, Hawking criticized Trump’s approach to environmental policy. “Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent. It affects America badly, so tackling it should win votes for his second term. God forbid,” he said.

that's 3 strikes. In Trump's America, one strike will get you thrown out.

Some people do, because they don't like formal titles. He was made a Companion of Honour in 1989, and those are considerably rarer (no more than 65 at a time) than knighthoods: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Companions_of_Honour

Tweets are so limiting. Sad!

But, seriously. I once naively tried to attend a Hawking appearance in Pasadena. People flew cross country to attend. The crowds outside were too big to get close enough to see the screen set up. Sad! His conservative admirers are going to be conflicted. Seems there shouldn't be trumpster scientists and mathematicians, but of course there are. As for engineers,...

lol. We knew liberal engineers when my husband worked at JPL also, but he makes, and keeps, friends with everyone. A couple of the others still share some of that noise down the rabbit hole via their email lists.
