Mike Flynn secretly met Turkish officials to plan illegal dead of night extradition of fugitive cleric

Former CIA Director James Woolsey said that he attended a secret meeting in September with ousted Trump national security adviser Adm. Mike Flynn to plan a covert operation to whisk away a fugitive cleric and hand him over to Turkeys authoritarian government.
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Woolsey and other people present at the meeting confirmed that Flynn was coordinating with officials from the cabinet of right-wing Turkish Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdogan in anticipation of extraditing Fethullah Gulen back to Turkey should Trump win the presidency.
The dead of night operation was intended to circumvent normal U.S. extradition laws, Woolsey said. The meeting took place on Sep. 19, and Woolsey said he arrived late only to be startled and alarmed that the discussion was treading into potentially illegal territory.
The plan, according to Woolsey, was a covert step in the dead of night to whisk this guy away. Gulen is wanted in Turkey for allegedly aiding last summers failed military coup against the Erdogan regime.

(48,955 posts)I don't know much about him, but am familiar with a few schools that are associated with his followers. I found those a tad creepy, but I find numerous closed mindset organizations a tad creepy.

(69,982 posts)some folks in the hood cluck their tongues about the return of the caliphate, as if they had a clue what that even meant. but people practically camp out to get their kids in this school. (not literally. they dont do it that way.)
the school is not selective enrollment, they have a lottery system.
it has the highest college acceptance rate in the city. their kids regularly bring home honors from academic competitions, including this year's robotics comp 1st prize.
the doors are always open to the community. something happening most weekends, including missions of mercy of all sorts, and meetings of interest to the community. the alderman does all kinds of stuff there.
district schools are run by the damn janitors and getting those school house doors opened is all but impossible.
travel is a part of the curriculum, w an annual overseas trip for the 8th graders. i know they have gone to turkey several times, but i think as time went along there was interest in other places. not sure where they are going these days.
and yes this is a charter. one of 2 exemplary charters in the hood. please lets dont go down that side track. or i'll be here all night.
as far as gulen goes, he seems to me to have all the trappings of a made up boogie man. i do know he fled turkey after working against govt corruption there.

(48,955 posts)the two I am familiar with preform decently, and serve an urban - under served community, which I applaud.
The creepy part (my earler term) was based on the account of a team (both female) of evaluators (hired by the schools) who worked on the accountability reports for their authorizer (in our case the Mayor's Office), and of a female teacher/friend who taught there for a couple of years. All said there was an awkward dynamic between the male school leaders who came off as controlling and dismissive. Could be just the individuals and not related to the organization. I know a lot of organizations (and schools, and heck currently our own govt) run by creepy individuals As I said, I really don't know much about the organization or Gulen.
Don't worry won't going down that side track - I helped start and lead one (also urban - also high performing) for a decade. For the reason you cite (getting sucked into an all night conversation) I usually disengage in those discussions.

(14,167 posts)Woolseys resignation as a Trump senior adviser comes amid frustrations over the incoming administrations national security plans and Trumps public comments undermining the intelligence community.
Effective immediately, Ambassador Woolsey is no longer a Senior Advisor to President-Elect Trump or the Transition. He wishes the President-Elect and his Administration great success in their time in office, Jonathan Franks, a spokesman for Woolsey, said in a statement.
Woolsey suggested in a pair of cable television interviews Thursday evening that he was only an informal adviser to Trump, with duties that included speaking to the journalists about Trump and his national security policies.

(12,894 posts)solid credibility in the intelligence community. He probably was horrified and disgusted with what he saw taking place, although it sounds like they left him out of meetings. Hmmm...so why do we think that is...
Glad he got out.

(135,425 posts)he'll turn state's evidence and sing like a fucking canary.
Name names, play the rat fink.
It's the only hope he has to reduce his exposure to the clink.
He also needs to maintain a low profile, because someone doing that kind of thing doesn't last very long in Mother Russia. He needs a bodyguard or ten and a food taster. He'd do well to go into protective custody, but only if he can assure himself that his "custodians" have his best interests at heart. I sure wouldn't stay in any high rise buildings.

(10,749 posts)consider also that Flynn was involved as a paid agent of the Turkish government.
Flynn might want to do some traveling soon - to a country without an extradition agreement with the US.

(135,425 posts)The National Enquirer is owned by a close friend of Trump.
They bought the story from "the mistress" (a Playboy model) about Trump's affair while Melania was pregnant with Barron. The cash paid included an exclusivity clause, so the "the mistress" couldn't flog her story anywhere else. Then, the Enquirer basically buried the story and didn't publish it. They used cash to shut someone up.
Anyway, The National Enquirer is now telling America's grocery shoppers that Flynn is a SPY.
Maddow had something on this tonight.
We can pretty much bet that came from the horse's ass....I mean, the horse's mouth.
