Warren: 'Today is a great day... but I'm not doing a touchdown dance'

Source: The Hill

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) on Friday praised the cancellation of a vote on a GOP ObamaCare repeal bill, saying it's a "great day" but that she isn't "doing a touchdown dance."

"Today is a great day for the people of Massachusetts & people across the country who depend on the Affordable Care Act. But I'm not doing a touchdown dance today," Warren said in a series of tweets.

"Not when the GOP is still hell-bent on rigging the system for the rich & powerful. This is why we fight. When we get out there & fight, we can make a real difference," she continued.

* * *
Warren joins Democrats in celebrating the GOP pulling their healthcare bill after they failed to earn enough support from Republicans, including Hillary Clinton and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as well as Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. However, she, like some others, cautioned that this was just the beginning and more healthcare reform will likely come in the future, at which time Democrats will still have to go head-to-head with Republicans.

With the defeat of Trumpcare we only won a battle, not the war.

The Democratic Party can't let their guard down and MUST keep the backbone they've finally found. I think this will especially help keep more Progressives and Independents engaged.

I brought my car into the dealership today and when I was alone in the waiting room I changed the TV channel from some movie to MSNBC. Unfortunately, Pence's speech in West Virginia came on and when the woman I usually deal with there came in to talk to me about my car, the first thing she said was "I hate him!" And she offered to change the channel. LOL! So I told her about DU...

because it doesn't fit in with their fears or prejudice (or as Simon & Garfunkal put it, "Still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.&quot .

I'm glad you got that reaction from her. I'm sure she was happy you were okay with it too. We're surrounded by proud Trump twits up here but have always been pretty private so don't have to deal with them very much. Probably just as well... I've developed a tendency lately to rudely burst out laughing at the ridiculous crap they say and then I start rattling off quotes and facts like a machine gun. I don't know why but they tend to avoid me after that... lol.

I'm pretty fortunate, I don't personally know any Trump supporters, I'm not sure how I would deal with it. It's not a subtle thing! He does something more blatantly and ridiculously awful every day! The people I know vote Democratic and they're pretty well informed, though I don't bring it up with everyone, LOL. Even the friends I grew up with turned out to be liberals, and they're amazingly proactive. The only one I suspect is my brother, I know he didn't like Trump, but he didn't like Hillary, either. But I've tried to mend fences with my brother since our mother died, so it's easier and more comfortable to talk about relatives and pets...

(Schenectady county & Niskayuna) is a different world from up here in some ways. We like the geography up here but mostly we moved up here for privacy and because we could afford to buy a small farm in the country and that wasn't possible downstate.

I grew up surrounded by Republicans but that was during the 60s and early 70s before they lost their collective minds and sold the last fragment of their souls.

My 95 yr old dad (who is still perking along and on all cylinders) told me he's still registered as a Republican but has voted almost totally the D ticket for years. He's thoroughly disgusted by what the R party has become and Trump gets his ire up like I've never heard before. He's totally at a loss why anyone sane would vote for him especially after that nasty sexual predator 'pussy' tape came out. He told with in a voice dripping with disgust, "you just don't treat women like that."

I just wish more Rs could see what to my dad and all of us Ds on DU is so very obvious.

And Glens Falls are traditionally Democrats. And we managed to elect Kirsten Gillibrand who remains very popular. I worked on both of Scott Murphy's campaigns and I liked him a lot. He took on most of Kirsten's positions on the issues and he took it seriously and was awfully smart. He was also local which meant he knew this area. I pass his house no matter where I'm going most days. The town that Stefanik says she's from says they've never heard of her...

My Dad was a lifelong Republican, but he was a liberal Republican, something you don't see anymore with their shift to the far right. Since Bush II was in office I've wished I could discuss these things with him since I can't imagine he would approve.

I mean, it's impossible to be in a constant state of outrage. And journalists are expected to behave "professionally." That why we watch Bill Maher and Stephen Colbert, they're allowed to sound off. Someone mentioned this on one of the news shows recently and I realized I'd been thinking the same thing. When I see some news person calmly describing the latest outrage, I want them to preface it with "You won't believe what he did now!"

It's not possible to sustain constant outrage... certainly not for long or it will take its toll.

I'd love it if news people would preface Trump news like that.. Even if just once in a while. I think that's why I enjoy reading Dan Rather now. He doesn't say those exact words but you know he's thinking similar.

And Rachel Maddow always has been. But then those are the ones we tune into hear because we share their opinions. And Dan Rather has always been a favorite of mine. As an anchor he was expected to be mainstream news, but he was a cut above. My job used to be writing up the CBS shows for the newspapers and Dan Rather's publicist was my news contact. He always believed in telling the truth wherever it took him, and it was a tragedy when he was sidelined. I respected him the most because he insisted on only doing "hard news," no reporting on celebrity divorces for him. I get impatient with the shows that mix news with entertainment...

Maybe not in Washington DC - but other areas of the country.

People are realizing how stupid, callow and evil the Republican party really is.

Time to reach out and welcome them to the good guys. Let's teach them how to use the force.
People respond positively if you approach them without rancor or blame.

You don't have to humiliate somebody just because they were taken in by Trump.
They're starting to figure out how they were duped, so help them make the leap to our side.
This could be the turning point.

Always be the messenger of hope and change.

Independents and, since we need the numbers to get the job done, hopefully even a few semi sane moderate Republicans, like Susan Collins, to become (to continue w/your analogy) 'exterminators' and 'flush the vermin out' before the framework becomes so weakened that it crashes to the ground.

That is how we will fix this. By coming together.

Of course, many thousands of Democratic operatives already work hard every day now to try to protect and rescue democracy from the barbarians. Instead of all the advances they happily planned, their work has degraded to this because most of the electorate didn't bother to vote, and a critical number of those who did chose termites.

Today we need to group together again and work at repairing ACA because we know it needs some fixing. We also need to watch carefully and go after the gop on their next fucking America agenda. Celebration is over. We have found that marches and forced town halls and overloading with mail and calls and emails work. Our women's march type of marches need to go on continuing with the old issues and bring to the front the new battles. We can in no way relax. In fact I suspect we need to go in more viciously than last time. They are going to be more prepared for us this time because they now know we are serious and know how to group together.
