Russian police arrest anti-corruption leader Navalny, hundreds more in nationwide rallies

Source: Washington Post

MOSCOW — A wave of unsanctioned rallies swept across Russia on Sunday to protest corruption in the government of President Vladimir Putin in a nationwide show of defiance not seen in years, one the Kremlin had tried in vain to prevent with bans and warnings.

Too angry to be cowed, they poured into the street, fed up with their country’s wide-reaching corruption and a government unwilling, or unable, to stop it. Police responded with barricades, tear gas and mass arrests in cities across Russia.

By Sunday evening, riot police in body armor and helmets hauled in more than 700 demonstrators in central Moscow, as the crowd, numbering in the tens of thousands, cheered, whistled and chanted, “Shame! Shame!” As twilight approached, protesters in the city clashed with police, and at least one officer was hospitalized with head trauma, the Meduza news agency reported.

One of the first detained in Moscow was the chief architect of the rallies, Alexei Navalny, who called on people to protest in the wake of his allegations that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has amassed vineyards, luxury yachts and lavish mansions worth more than $1 billion.

The Republican presidential nominee told the forum the Russian president "has been a leader far more than our president [Obama] has been".

It came on the same day the chief of the Pentagon accused Russia of sowing the seeds of global instability.

Quizzed by NBC host Matt Lauer on his previous complimentary remarks about Mr Putin, Mr Trump responded: "He does have an 82% approval rating."

"I think when he calls me brilliant I'll take the compliment, ok?" added the businessman. He said Mr Putin had "great control over his country".

Russian citizens arrested by the hundreds protesting Putin's corruption. In the USA, republican lackeys cheer Putin and Russian's compromising our elections to get their stooge in the White House.

Sure Trump wishes he could emulate Putin's approach to dissent.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s net favorable rating among Republicans has climbed by an astonishing 56 percentage points since July 2014, according to a new YouGov/Economist poll.

Thirty-seven percent of Republicans polled hold a very or somewhat favorable opinion of Putin, while 47 percent hold a very or somewhat unfavorable opinion of him.

Though still negative overall, that -10 percentage point net approval rating represents a drastic increase from 2014, when Putin’s net favorable rating stood at -66 points among Republicans, according to YouGov Elections Editor Will Jordan.

emocrats’ attitudes toward Putin, on the other hand, have grown even more negative since 2014. His net favorable rating among Democrats sits at -62 points in the new YouGov/Economist poll, down from -54 points in 2014.

There are bills in several states that would make protesting against tRump a criminal offense. The parallels between our two governments are astounding!

Due to term limits, Putin can't be president all the time.
So when Putin is president, Medvedev sits in as PM; and
when Putin is not president, he takes the role of PM while
Medvedev holds the presidency for him.

For this, Medvedev is richly rewarded, while Putin continues
to rule continuously.

Rachel Maddow also did a segment on Navalny, and at that
time, about a month ago, I was very worried for Navalny's future
because he was going to challenge Putin for the presidency.

And now this ....
