The bad boys of Brexit join fight to break up California
Source: The Times
They made their names breaking Britain away from Brussels, but Nigel Farage and his money man Arron Banks have now set themselves an even tougher target splitting California in two.
The self-styled bad boys of Brexit have just returned from the state, where Farage helped raise $1m (£800,000) for a campaign to set up a referendum to divide California down the middle.
The Farage and Banks-backed intervention comes amid competing visions for Calexit, with a rival effort aiming to take the state out of the union in reaction to the election of Donald Trump.
The British pair believe the same political playbook as Bankss Leave.EU campaign would triumph by pitching ordinary people against the liberals of Los Angeles.

The speaker was calling for Californias independence from the United States.
Alexei Gavrilko nodded approvingly. A burly, bearded, camouflage-wearing separatist from eastern Ukraine, he said he had come to the posh Moscow hotel just outside the Kremlin to communicate with colleagues representing separatist and secessionist groups from the United States, Europe, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.
During a conference dubbed the Dialogue of Nations, Gavrilko listened carefully to Louis Marinelli, head of the Yes California group that is determined to hold the Golden States independence referendum in 2019.
For the first time in history, we, the people of California, who were conquered and annexed by the American military about 170 years ago, will have a chance to express our voice to either remain a state in the American union, or instead, to pursue a path toward a nationhood, Marinelli said solemnly.

(1,570 posts)Is it possible for them to Gerrymander another state (or two) out of California to give the Republicans 2 more seats?
Edit: Upstate New York might be next.

(3,205 posts)It takes more than a popular vote to split up a state and have them all accepted into the union.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_partition_proposals
Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution, oftentimes called the New States Clause, grants to the United States Congress the authority to admit new states into the United States beyond the thirteen already in existence at the time the Constitution went into effect (June 21, 1788, after ratification by nine of the thirteen states).[1] It also includes a stipulation originally designed to give Eastern states that still had Western land claims (then including Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia) a veto over whether their western counties could become states.[2]
New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress
The California legislature is dominated by the Democrats. It's quite possible to split California into two states and have both of them dominated by the Democrats. In which case the national Republican dominated legislature would refuse to approve it.
