Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters Tuesday night that if the Justice Department does not appoint a special prosecutor to take over the investigation into Russian interference on Trumps behalf in the 2016 election, it will indicate that FBI Director James Comeys sudden termination was part of a cover up.
Were these investigations getting too close to home for the president? he asked.
Schumer says he questions both the timing of Comeys firing as well as the reason given by the Justice Departmentthe mishandling of the investigation into Hillary Clintons e-mails last summer and fall.
Why now? Why did it happen today? Schumer asked, noting that if the Clinton missteps were the true reason, the Trump administration could have dismissed him in January.

UPDATE:
Schumer calls for special prosecutor, suggests cover-up

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) demanded that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appoint a special prosecutor to handle the investigation into President Donald Trump campaign's ties to Russia after FBI Director James Comey's abrupt firing Tuesday.
Without such an independent probe, Schumer said, every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire Director Comey was part of a cover-up.
The American peoples trust in our criminal justice system is in Rosensteins hands, Schumer added. Mr. Rosenstein, America depends on you to restore faith in our criminal justice system, which is going to be badly shattered at the administrations actions today.
Even some Republicans raised concern over the firing of Comey, who as FBI director was overseeing the bureaus investigation into allegations of collusion between Russia and Trump campaign aides.
Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he was disappointed, calling Comey a man of honor and integrity.

(27,800 posts)Curious to see how it's going to unfold. Will the Senate do its job, or are they too excited by the prospect of taking away our healthcare and opening up all the national parks to oil drilling?

(594 posts)Reading the letters from the Justice Department Leaders?, the next step will be to bring Hillary to justice and put her on trial. Wait until we see who TRump appoints to be the new director. It is very clear that is what they all want to do and will try their hardest to do it. No self-respecting GOP turd would do anything to stop that from happening.
We are in for a long battle and unfortunately, we have few weapons

(2,037 posts)Trump's using his personal rent-a-thug to deliver the dismissal letter to Comey was nothing less than a personal threat.
