The article only says "reportedly". Giving up athletics after college really isnt the same thing.
Theres gotta be some statement out there from him or something, as much as he loves to talk.

I pretty much gave up exercise after college too. I thought I was just fat and lazy. Now I know I am being a conservationist.

definitely didn't believe in too much exercise, but around age 95 we started keeping our mouths shut about it. We'd say she needed to walk more, to which she would say, "Why?" Indeed. She made it to 101.
