Poll: Biden is top Dem in 2020 matchup with Trump

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 05/16/17 11:34 AM EDT

Former Vice President Joe Biden fares best among Democrats in a hypothetical matchup against President Trump in 2020, according to a survey from the liberal-leaning Public Policy Polling out Tuesday.

Biden edges Trump by 14 points in a head-to-head race, 54 percent to 40 percent, but he's far from being the only Democrat with an edge on the president heading into the next election.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also fared strongly against Trump in the poll, leading him 52 percent to 39 percent.

Three other Democratic lawmakers in the poll also led Trump: Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Al Franken (Minn.) and Cory Booker (N.J.). Warren led Trump 49 percent to 39 percent, while Franken scored 46 percent versus 38 percent for Trump. Booker, a freshman senator, scored 46 percent support versus 39 percent for Trump.

... over the next few years. I wouldn't be surprised if the eventual nominee is someone who doesn't have a big name for themselves on the national stage yet, but will find one in the actions they take against trump and the compromised gop.

Biden needs to help groom some new young Democrats. He and the Clintons can mentor but their days are over.

We've got some pretty stupid-tastic traffic/tax/transportation kerfuffles going right now. Technically none of them are specifically his fault, but it's kind of an ugly atmosphere here, especially as Sound Transit's RTA tax has landed and it's much higher than anyone anticipated.

He's an option I hadn't thought of though. Maybe he'd do better nationally than I'd guess.

Disclaimer-- I did work last cycle in Washington and saw a lot of his ads.

My top choices are him and Andrew Cuomo. At this point I'm leaning Jay Inslee because I don't want the election to (again) be between two New Yorkers (and I say this as someone who is from NY).

Inslee has a stellar record on environmental issues IMO. That is a big deal for me.

I want the next nominee to be somebody like Al Gore, someone who I can trust to make climate change priority number one.

I cannot think of anyone who I trust more than Jay Inslee--other than Gore himself--to do that.

Honestly I hadn't given him much thought, until it was brought up here. I think he's a reasonable option, and should be encouraged to explore it.

A lot of the negatives that come up with him, are really the state legislature failing to act, not even landing things on his desk to approve or veto.

And Franken will be a little less diplomatic, which we need right now.

Biden held up a mirror to the republicans and gently prompted them to look at themselves. Franken will hold up the mirror and say look you vicious inhumane motherfuckers, look at what you are....

We kinda need that right now.

that the poll only looked at "The Rock" (Dwayne Johnson) as Trump's Republican primary challenger. Is the former professional wrestler and now actor that serious a candidate?

Sounds like he's wavering on the idea:

Dwayne Johnson is having second thoughts about a presidential run, insisting he wouldn't make a great US leader.

The Hollywood action man fuelled reports suggesting he was interested in following Arnold Schwarzenegger into politics during a recent GQ interview, in which he admitted he was interested in US President Donald Trump's job.

"I think anything's possible, right? This is America," he told Entertainment Tonight. "What has been so flattering over the past week - and really humbling and very eye-opening - is the amount of American people who actually want to see this happen.

&quot However), I don't think I would be a great president. Politics is not my business and I'm not a politician."

Stop living in the past...I love Joe, him and PBO are my heros, but we need to move forward and raise up younger Democrats, clear the field a little and give others some breathing room.

I would like Jay Inslee or Al Franken (or both on same ticket) but both men would be 70 when they took office. That makes the likelihood of 2 terms slim.

I say that because PBO is 55 now, after two terms, we still have him in the game and working on Democratic (big D) ideals.
Even Bill Clinton is just now turning 70 and he did two terms and has been out of office for 17 years.

We need to focus on raising new Dems up and shepherding new Dems into running for office in their state legislature, governorships and the House and Senate. That is how you win the long game.

So is Bernie, and he is not a Democrat.

We need someone younger. Even though I like Franken, he is getting older, too. We need him in the Senate.

We have younger people who are stepping up. Let's look at them more closely.

other than Elizabeth Warren, seems to have shown up in the awareness of ordinary Democrats.

WE NEED A YOUNGER CANDIDATE! And yes, I'm shouting.

Even Warren will be over 70 in 2020.

Perhaps more to the point, we don't need yet another Baby Boomer running this country.

And I'm one of them myself. I'm 68 and I have great faith in and admiration for both the Gen Xers and the Millennials. Note: Those really are two different generations with their own specific characteristics.

Joe Biden would be a longshot, don't believe he will win the nomination...

Bernie Sanders isn't a Dem - I suppose he could re-join and run, tho...

Elizabeth Warren is very likely to run, and has a shot...

Al Franken is a dream candidate, hope he runs...

Cory Booker is another good candidate...

I will enthusiastically support the nominee!
