McConnell: 'I Don't Know How We Get To 50' Senate Votes To Pass ACA Repeal

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Wednesday said he doesnt know how Republicans will muster enough votes to get their bill repealing and replacing Obamacare through the Senate.
I dont know how we get to 50 at the moment, McConnell said in an interview with Reuters. But thats the goal. He said there was not a whole lot of news to be made on health care and did not offer a timetable for passage of the Republican health care bill.
McConnell told Reuters that tax legislation would be less challenging to get through Congress than the legislation to repeal Obamacare, and said he does not plan to work with congressional Democrats to advance his legislative agenda.
It took congressional Republicans two tries to get the repeal bill through the House. They pulled the first iteration of the bill after failing to muster the votes to pass it, amid defections from hardline conservatives and moderate Republicans, and narrowly passed the second iteration despite unified opposition from Democratic members.

Mitch McConnell sees tough path for passing health-care bill
53 Mins Ago
Reuters
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday said he has yet to hit upon a formula for repealing Obamacare and replacing it with a new health-care program, but he expressed some optimism on another top priority, overhauling the tax code.
In an exclusive interview with Reuters, McConnell said health care and taxes still top the Republican legislative agenda, and he added he will not be reaching out to the minority Democrats on either one because differences between the two parties are too stark.
That approach will leave McConnell, a conservative 75-year-old Kentuckian with a reputation as a dealmaker, a narrow path to win passage of these ambitious goals, which are also at the head of Republican President Donald Trump's policy agenda.
Referring to behind-the-scenes work among Senate Republicans on a health-care bill, McConnell said, "I don't know how we get to 50 (votes) at the moment. But that's the goal."
Under a scenario of gathering the votes needed for passage in the 100-seat chamber, Republican Vice President Mike Pence would be called upon to cast any potential tie-breaking Senate vote.
