Eight dead, including deputy sheriff, after shooting in Mississippi

Source: AP/LA Times

Authorities in Mississippi say a suspect is in custody after eight people were killed in a shooting, including a sheriff's deputy.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said the shootings occurred at three separate homes Saturday night in rural Lincoln County.

Strain says charges have not yet been filed against the suspect and that it would be “premature” to discuss a motive.

It was not clear whether the suspect knew his victims before allegedly killing them.

Authorities from multiple agencies took Cory Godbolt into custody on East Lincoln Road Sunday morning after they say he killed eight people, including a Lincoln County deputy.

The deputy's name and the names of the other victims, have not yet been released.

Godbolt fled from police and allegedly killed people at three different scenes in Lincoln County. He told The Clarion-Ledger reporter he did it because he loved his wife and children and he loves Bogue Chitto.

This is a developing story. We are on the scene in Lincoln County. Check back here for updates as this story unfolds.

A Bogue Chitto man taken into custody after multiple people were killed overnight, including a sheriff’s deputy, has a long criminal history according to arrest records.

Willie Cory Godbolt, 35, was taken into custody early Sunday morning as the suspect in the deaths of eight people. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said the shootings occurred at three separate homes in the county.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said a deputy and three others were killed on Lee Drive in Bogue Chitto. Two more people were shot and killed at a residence on Coopertown Road, he said. It was unclear where the third crime scene was located.

Godbolt in 2005 was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault after he allegedly struck a man with a pistol and took his wallet, jewelry and cash outside a Bogue Chitto residence.

He must have known that he was going away for a long time. Might as well use that gun wisely, and take out as many people as he could.

'Cause as you know, an unused firearm is of little value to a gun fanatic.
