A noose was found in an exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Smithsonian officials said.

A tourist found the noose inside the Era of Segregation 1786-1968 exhibit, a Smithsonian spokeswoman told BuzzFeed News.

"The noose has long represented a deplorable act of cowardice and depravity — a symbol of extreme violence for African Americans," Lonnie Bunch, the museum's director, said in a staff e-mail. "Today's incident is a painful reminder of the challenges that African Americans continue to face."

Park Police removed the rope and the gallery was reopened within three hours, museum officials said. .................
