The Time I Got Recruited to Collude with the Russians
Source: https://lawfareblog.com/
I read the Wall Street Journals article yesterday on attempts by a GOP operative to recover missing Hillary Clinton emails with more than usual interest. I was involved in the events that reporter Shane Harris described, and I was an unnamed source for the initial story. Whats more, I was named in, and provided the documents to Harris that formed the basis of, this evenings follow-up story, which reported that A longtime Republican activist who led an operation hoping to obtain Hillary Clinton emails from hackers listed senior members of the Trump campaign, including some who now serve as top aides in the White House, in a recruitment document for his effort:
Officials identified in the document include Steve Bannon, now chief strategist for President Donald Trump; Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager and now White House counselor; Sam Clovis, a policy adviser to the Trump campaign and now a senior adviser at the Agriculture Department; and retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, who was a campaign adviser and briefly was national security adviser in the Trump administration.
Im writing this piece in the spirit of Benjamin Wittess account of his interactions with James Comey immediately following the New York Times story for which he acted as a source. The goal is to provide a fuller accounting of experiences which were thoroughly bizarre and which I did not fully understand until I read the Journals account of the episode yesterday. Indeed, I still do not fully understand the events I am going to describe, both what they reflected then or what they mean in retrospect. But I can lay out what happened, facts from which readers and investigators can draw their own conclusions.

It would appear that this ties the Trump campaign and senior WH officials directly to efforts to get hacked emails from Hillary's server
here's a link to the WSJ story

As reported Thursday by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Smith and people he recruited to his effort theorized the deleted emails might have been stolen by hackers and might contain matters that were politically damaging. He and his associates said they were in touch with several groups of hackers, including two from Russia they suspected were tied to the Moscow government, in a bid to find any stolen emails and potentially hurt Mrs. Clintons prospects.
Mr. Smiths purpose in listing the officials isnt clear. There is no indication in the document that he sought or received any coordination from the campaign officials or the campaign in general.
GOP Operative Sought Clinton Emails From Hackers, Implied a Connection to Flynn
Mr. Smith died in mid-May at age 81, about 10 days after he spoke to the Journal. He said he operated independently of the Trump campaign.

(51,129 posts)How did Mr. Smith die? she asked him.
Its a great question, and I should say we do not know how he died, he said. We made multiple attempts, both with family members and with associates of his, as well as government officials in the town where he lived, to try and determine his cause of death, and we were unsuccessful.

(58,785 posts)in this case suggesting, to me at least, less reason for him to be murdered. Also, strict medical privacy laws would explain lack of information on his cause of death. If Smith's family just said no, then no one could legally disclose it. Notably, there's no indication of an inquest into it.
Smith's behavior in general suggests he was just one among millions of the malicious fools Hillary's runs for president revealed for what they were.

Btw, I noticed his own best guess is still that Russia did not hack Hill and Bill's personal server.

(5,801 posts)Perhaps Mr. Clovis' apparent involvement in this sordid affair will prevent him from being named to a science post at USDA. A post for which he has no relevant experience and in which he would be an abysmal failure. Guess that was gonna be the point.

(58,785 posts)him quickly doesn't cause statements of direct ties to spring up, it certainly does for many of the people he's worked for, supported for office, and worked alongside once joining the Rump campaign.
Regarding Clovis's joining Rump after working for Koch-buddy Rick Perry, from Washington Monthly: "I wrote about Clovis's candidate-shopping yesterday, and while noting his close relationship to Trumps Iowa State Director Chuck Laudner, suggested hed be a better fit with somebody like Ted Cruz. I mean, Clovis is a serious constitutional conservative (nice way to put it?); whats he doing with a guy (Rump) who has little but contempt for conservative economic shibboleths or for that matter civil liberties?"
The Koch alliance has of course been tremendously successful in filling Rump's appointments with their choices.
So in this case, destruction would not be failure when the mandate was to destroy from within. Which, of course, it is.
