Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins' Auschwitz video draws criticism

Source: NOLA.com / Times-Picayune

A video U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-Port Barre, recorded in part from inside the Nazis' Auschwitz concentration camp last week has drawn criticism on social media for what commenters described as its disrespectful and self-serving content.

The video includes Higgins recording from inside one of the former gas chambers -- an action that drew criticism from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

Soon after it was republished on NOLA.com on Tuesday, the Twitter account of the Auschwitz Memorial took issue with Higgins' decision to film himself at the site. "Everyone has the right to personal reflections," the museum's account wrote in a Tweet. "However, inside a former gas chamber, there should be mournful silence. It's not a stage."

In the comment thread that followed, the museum posted a photo of the entrance to the gas chambers. "You are in a building where the SS murdered thousands of people," a stone engraving reads. "Please maintain silence here: remember their suffering and show respect for their memory."

Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins is being criticized for posting a video from inside a gas chamber at a Holocaust memorial museum.

The Republican congressman posted a five-minute video to YouTube over the Fourth of July holiday weekend that he narrated from within a gas chamber at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland.

"It's hard to walk away from the gas chambers and ovens without a very sober feeling of commitment, unwavering commitment, to make damn sure that the United States of America is protected from the evils of the world," he says in the narration.

He also says gas chamber killings show why the U.S. military "must be invincible."

The real lesson to be learned is that nations should always be wary of fascists scapegoating minorities for the financial catastrophes created by the rich and the greedy. Inevitably, a heartless, soul less leader will gleefully plunge their nation into war and round up and kill millions of their own minority citizens in the name of "patriotism" and quote the Bible while the blood runs in the streets.

It's not hard to imagine Clay and his pal Donald doing exactly that.

I honestly think NOTHING could move Rep. Clay beyond staying on the Gravy Train in Washington, with his snout down in the trough.

He couldn't care less what happened to all the victims of any of the wars. It's not in a Republican's nature unless it affects him directly.

They could have fended off the foes that inflicted such horrors on their own countrymen.

but the problem is he's too stupid to realize how offensive this is, on so many levels. I wonder if he has seen Shoah; I bet he's seen Schindler's List. I think he was trying, in his clumsy, ignorant way, to make a moving tribute to the victims of Auschwitz, but he doesn't realize how untalented he is, how many far more gifted filmmakers have done this work already. We don't need an ignorant legislator from Louisiana or anyplace else to put his oar in, especially with all the selfies showing how sensitive he is. His big problem is stupidity.

Edited: Well, now that I've seen more of this asshole, I *don't* think his heart was in the right place. He's a self-aggrandizing attention whore with the sensitivity of a charging rhino. And he's still very, very stupid.

He missed an opportunity to get through to the KKK kids in Louisiana and the reality that history repeats itself. If the tape could be editted to show the school kids what we have fought against they may even understand hate is bad.

This fine fellow decided to make a film to show what will happen if our government is restrained, and he made it at Auschwitz.

During World War II the Germans and Russians divided Poland. Western PL became German soil, Eastern PL became Soviet territory. No invading terrorists did this, corn pone; that was an act of their own government.

To make a long story short, this could be a rather disgusting and crude way of telling the US what's in store for us if Trump is left in office, but he didn't mean it that way.
