Dems get top challenger for Nevada Senate fight

Source: The Hill

Freshman Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen announced her Nevada Senate bid Thursday, hoping to take on Republican Sen. Dean Heller in 2018's general election.

The Nevada race represents one of the few offensive opportunities for Democrats, who face a daunting Senate map elsewhere in the country with many incumbents defending their seats. Landing a perceived top-tier candidate like Rosen in Nevada, a state that Democrat Hillary Clinton won in 2016, boosts their hopes of taking Heller's seat.

Rosen blasted the Trump administration in a Thursday statement announcing her bid, making it clear that opposition to President Trump will be a centerpiece of her bid against Heller.

"Now more than ever, Nevadans deserve a Senator they can trust to be an independent voice standing up to President Trump, not his enabler. Senator Heller might not sound like President Trump, but his voting record shows he supported Trump’s agenda 100% of the time in his first 100 days," she said.

She's in a swing district, and only won by .02% or something else ridiculously close. I hope we can get someone solid in that vacated seat.

She can have a potentially tough race every two years, or a potentially tough race every six years.

sure, Heller may have criticized Trump a time or two, but his actions are a lot different than his words.

we need more dems to run for state legislatures and local elections too. It would be sweet to be able to draw district lines after the 2020 census.

Republicans have been doing that for decades - getting people to run for local offices. Then, if you do well on the town Board of Education, you can then run for Mayor or your town or state Representative. Do this in enough places and you suddenly have a deep bench of candidates that know local (town) and state issues.

Rosen officially announces Senate bid, says Reid encouraged her to run

Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen announced today she is officially running for U.S. Senate, culminating weeks of deliberations that — once again — began with a phone call from Nevada’s political godfather Harry Reid.

The freshman congresswoman told The Nevada Independent Wednesday evening that she will not seek re-election to her seat in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District but will instead pursue a bid against Republican Sen. Dean Heller, considered the most vulnerable Republican in the Senate and Democrats’ best pickup opportunity in 2018. Heller has represented the seat since he was appointed to it in 2011 by Gov. Brian Sandoval after the resignation of John Ensign.

Rosen, 59, said that Reid reached out to her at the end of May and asked her to consider running for Senate. The longtime Democratic senator also encouraged Rosen, a former software programmer and synagogue president, to run for Congress in 2016.

“He told me to think about it and that’s what I did when I came home to talk to my husband,” Rosen said. “I’ve said this so many times before, my faith tradition teaches me that we’re supposed to leave the world a better place than when we found it, and it’s important that if you have the opportunity to stand up and make a difference for things that matter to you and to the people that you love and care about or your community that I should do that.”.....................................
