McCain Warns Against Repealing Obamacare Without Replacement

Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published JULY 6, 2017 8:53 AM

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Wednesday said that the Senate should not repeal the Affordable Care Act before finalizing a replacement bill.

“I fear we may fall under the trap of repealing and not replacing and that would be bad for America,” he said in Phoenix, according to KTAR.

Senate Republicans left Washington D.C. last week for the July 4 recess without a final bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. As lawmakers headed back to their states, President Donald Trump threw a curveball and endorsed a plan to repeal Obamacare immediately and come up with a replacement later.

Such a plan would likely face opposition from several Republican senators. Senate leadership initially proposed that strategy in January, but it was quickly shot down by several senators. McCain has been quiet about his stance on the draft Senate bill to replace Obamacare and would not share how he would vote on the bill on Wednesday, according to KTAR. He did say that he would like to offer three amendments to the bill backed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R).

was a Bush I & II strategy, and seeks to maximize the opportunity for the public to agree with the politician

Bush I would be for something on Monday, but against it on Thursday night. Everyone on both sides of the issue
heard something they liked to hear in that. Once the positive is recorded, the issue is forgotten.

McCain does the same thing. Waffling. He was for it before he was against it.

Blow with public opinion if you can, then be a mean ol' ornery SOB.

Is that people think that something changed about the policy in a positive way that made the speaker change his mind about it, when it's the same hunk of shit that it was before (or worse).

I.e., count on McCain voting for it.

I've always wondered what he got from doing this flip flop jig step, and now I finally get it! It's always seemed so strange to me because Dems don't do it that often ... lol ... and they better not start!

That is not what he said, of course. If he wants to stop that "trap," saying those words would help prevent it!

Anytime McCain comes out against his party, that just means he'll vote for any bill the Repugs put up, regardless if it's exactly what he (seemingly) complained about. Is there any issue on which he won't take both sides?

Just because you pointed out the obvious now doesn't mean it's okay to vote for it.
