Poll: Most Americans Think Trump Did Something Wrong With Russia

Source: Talking Points Memo

By NICOLE LAFOND Published JULY 6, 2017 9:20 AM

A majority of Americans — about 54 percent — think President Donald Trump did something either illegal or unethical when it comes to Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election, a recent NPR survey found.

Of those who believe the President was involved in some type of wrongdoing with Russia, about a quarter think Trump did something illegal, and 29 percent think his actions were probably unethical, but didn’t break the law.

Thirty-six percent of those surveyed think the President didn’t do anything wrong, according to the poll, which was conducted by NPR, PBS NewsHour and Marist poll.

Nearly three-quarters of Republicans think Trump did not do anything wrong regarding Russia — 73 percent — with 15 percent indicating they think he did something unethical, but not illegal. Just 4 percent of the Republicans surveyed think Trump was involved in illegal activities with Russia.

On Russia, Republican And Democratic Lenses 'Have A Very Different Tint'

July 6, 20175:00 AM ET

JESSICA TAYLOR

A majority of Americans believe President Trump has done something either illegal or unethical when it comes to Russia, according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

The 54 percent of people who believe something untoward has gone on include a quarter who believe the president has done something illegal in regards to his dealings with Russia, and 29 percent of Americans who think he has done something unethical, but not illegal. Thirty-six percent of Americans believe Trump has done nothing wrong. Those numbers reflect an increase in the number of Americans believing something either illegal or unethical went on compared to a February 2017 Marist survey when 49 percent of Americans thought the president had done something either illegal or unethical in regards to Russia.

There's a deep partisan divide in the country when it comes to investigations into Trump's relationship with Russia and whether he or his campaign associates did anything wrong. Republicans have overwhelmingly put their trust in Trump in his approach to Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, whom Trump is scheduled to meet with on Friday. But Democrats and, to a lesser degree, independents are increasingly convinced there was some type of wrongdoing or ethical breach.

Seventy-three percent of Republicans say Trump himself has done nothing wrong, with 15 percent saying he has done something unethical but not illegal, and just 4 percent say he has done something illegal.

I mean, Fox News was spreading the lie that collusion is not illegal, when there are numerous statutes on the books that state that it is - including one that carries the death penalty.

trusted by many people. For many good reasons. You have to wonder why the republicans are so enamored of a guy who has demonstrated over and over and over that he is a liar, a cheat, an an abusive a-hole.

republican "values" clearly do not correspond in any way to decency, honesty, integrity, or honor.

I believe we will see this as t-rump's first real sit down in the sandbox of geo-politics.

watch as he flings sand around and declares himself the king of the sandbox.

then putey plops in right beside him.

ooops. no more king.

now merely a puppet.

No, you're the puppet.
