KKK marchers say they will be armed Saturday at Charlottesville rally
Source: Washington Post
A Ku Klux Klan chapter holding a rally in downtown Charlottesville on Saturday afternoon says it expects 80 to 100 members and supporters to take part in the protest and that most will have guns with them.
Its an open-carry state, so our members will be armed, said James Moore, a member of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which is headquartered in Pelham, NC, near the Virginia border. Moore said that if members are attacked, they will defend themselves.
The KKK is protesting the Charlottesville City Councils decision this year to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a public park and rename that park. Once called Lee Park, it is now Emancipation Park. A court injunction has halted the statues removal until a November hearing. On Thursday, a Confederate Heroes plaque attached to the statue was removed by city workers.
The liberals are taking away our heritage, Moore said.

This is the deep south, and it was our very conservative neighbors and acquaintances who explained the local custom of denying them oxygen. And now they go try to bother people elsewhere.

(19,193 posts)I'm in NO WAY condoning what these lunatics have to say, however they have 1st amendment rights that protect their freedom to say it. Free speech is a two way street. I personally abhor their message of hate and racism, but I'll defend their right to voice their opinions, no matter how misguided and ignorant they are.
Myself, I'd say 25 miles away from their little hate-fest. If no one showed up they'd just be preaching to the choir. I realize some people feel more strongly about that, and WILL show up just to tell them how creepy and misguided they are. And that is THEIR right, but to provoke these lunatics in any way is just inviting trouble. I care too much about the "good guys" here, and if a single Democrat were to get shot it would be horrible. These people carry guns because THEY WANT TO USE THEM! Don't give them the slightest reason to do so.

Would folks stay 25 miles away and let them practice free speech?
I say show up in great numbers and overwhelm them with peace love and diversity.
Maybe 100 people to their one.
Now that is a demonstration.
And I'll be dammned if some gun nut try's to intimidate me into staying 25 miles away.

(19,193 posts)call it whatever you want. I call it "common sense". If you want to put yourself in harm's way, that's your business. My contention is, if no one pays attention to them, if everyone ignores the hell out of them, they'll look pretty damned silly marching around in their costumes of hate, with sidearms strapped to them.
Exposing myself to undoubtedly drunk - and perhaps drugged - hateful lunatics who have loaded weapons within reach IS NOT a wager I'm prepared to make with my life. Your mileage may vary. That's one of the wonderful aspects of our country. You can decide for yourself which course of action you prefer to take. However, that same right to those decisions are afforded the opposition as well.
And, if for one second, you think these people will respond positively to a demonstration of "peace, love and diversity", you're only fooling yourself. These people are TRUMP SUPPORTERS, incapable of empathy, and certainly not enamored with concept of diversity.

(1,701 posts)Free speech is one thing, but we all know that that is not what the Klan is about. Would we allow a march by Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah? The Klan has murdered many, many people, and made many more justifiably fearful for their lives.
I don't know what the best way is to counter this is: whether to show up in opposition or simply to ignore them. I am sure that they hate being ignored, but that may be too passive a response.

(7,981 posts)GETTYSBURG--A "patriot" who brought a revolver to Gettysburg National Military Park Saturday amid rumors of desecration of memorials accidentally shot himself in the leg Saturday.
Benjamin Hornberger, 23, of Shippensburg, accidentally triggered the revolver, which was inside a leg holster, when he temporarily rested the bottom of his flag pole against the holster, according to witnesses.
Park police were nearby when the shooting occurred and officers quickly applied a tourniquet that may have saved the man's life, said Sgt. Anna Rose, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Park Police.
A tourniquet type device covered the wound on the man's left thigh as he was loaded into an ambulance. He talked with paramedics and seemed in good spirits.
The gun then went off a second time about 1 p.m. when police were trying to unload the weapon. The gun was pointed at the ground in a field north of Meade's Headquarters along the west side of Taneytown Road. A PennLive reporter witnessed the second shot, which occurred as visitors to the park milled nearby.

(50,553 posts)About twelve miles northeast of the park where the Klukkers are holding their rally lies the Army's National Ground Intelligence Center. There's a very large open field in the area - just perfect for holding a big celebration with food vendors, bands, maybe even fireworks.
What keeps hate groups going is people paying attention to them. If there's such a great party up by NGIC that everyone - ESPECIALLY the press - who might go to protest the Klan rally decides the party would be lots more fun and goes there instead, the Klan rally will be a failure.

(37,319 posts)and they had a 2009 Rand McNally Road Atlas, Food edition. There were write-ups about food all over the U.S. I found especially the food from the South interesting and delicious. There were pictures of nice people involved with cooking it and presenting it. The kind of people that bring joy to life.
But why have such things as your heritage, when you can have bigoted armed idiots as your heritage.
Of course, food is only a small start. But it's a good start. There used to be a lot of good things said about the South. Terms like "Georgia Peach", "Southern Hospitality" and many great expressions. A lot of great American writers. And as far as the Civil War goes, the War was no doubt a tragedy, but people on both sides fought with courage and distinction.
