Liu, who won the Peace Prize in 2010, spent much of the past three decades in forced confinement — at home, at labor camps or in prison. He was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in May. International calls for his release were issued in his final months.

His case is the latest in a string of Chinese dissidents whose incarceration ended in serious illness or fatality, but his plight remained largely invisible at home, where his writings were censored and he was labeled a mere criminal.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Struck by liver cancer, Chinese Nobel Peace Prize-winner Liu Xiaobo dies

ReutersJuly 13, 2017

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo, who was being treated for late-stage liver cancer, died on Thursday of multiple organ failure, the government said, having not been allowed to leave the country for treatment as he wished.

Liu, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for "inciting subversion of state power" after he helped write a petition known as "Charter 08" calling for sweeping political reforms.

He was recently moved from jail to a hospital in the northeastern city of Shenyang to be treated.

The Shenyang Bureau of Justice said in a brief statement on its website that Liu had suffered multiple organ failure and efforts to save him had failed.

Despite being given multiple forms of treatment, his illness had continued to worsen, it added.
