By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, July 31, 7:53 PM

MEXICO CITY — Mexican prosecutors have formally lodged drug charges against four high-ranking army officers, including three generals and a lieutenant colonel.

The Attorney General’s Office says charges of “organized crime to foment drug trafficking” have been lodged against retired generals Tomas Angeles Dauahare, Roberto Dawe Gonzalez and Ricardo Escorcia.

But charged in the same drug trafficking case was U.S.-born drug trafficker Edgar Valdes Villarreal, alias “La Barbie.”

The four were detained in May and had been held under a form of house arrest. They are the highest-ranking Mexican army officials arrested in at least 15 years.

High ranking military leaders involved in the drug trade.

At least in Mexico they have the guts to press charges against high ranking officials. The US tends to frown on punishing the rich.

In Mexico, it corrupts all the institutions that wage it. And don't doubt that includes the military.

Then there's the problem of human rights violations by a military force doing civilian law enforcement work...

And it looks like La Barbie is doing some serious, big-time talking. He must hope to be a free man some day. Maybe if he coughs up enough generals, it won't matter how many people were murdered on his orders.
