UC Davis confirms officer at center of pepper spraying controversy no longer on the force

Source: Sacramento Bee

Lt. John Pike, the UC Davis police officer who became a focal point of last November's pepper spraying incident during a campus protest, is no longer employed by the university, a spokesman confirmed late Tuesday.

UC Davis spokesman Barry Shiller said he could not discuss the details of Pike's departure, but in response to queries from The Bee, he said Pike was no longer employed there as of Tuesday.

"Consistent with privacy guidelines established in state law and university policy, I can confirm that John Pike's employment with the university ended on July 31, 2012," Shiller said. "I'm unable to comment further."

Pike, 39, declined to comment when reached by The Bee, saying he wanted to consult with his attorney first.

to riot weapons like tear gas, dogs or tazers. The real police should have been called in not some amateur mall cop who is not an LEO.

In New York, SUNY police officers have every authority on campus as a LEO off campus, so far as carrying a service weapon and full authority to make arrests and charge individuals with crimes.

Not excusing Pikes' actions, or agree with this, but he may have had full authority and access to the same weapons as his cointerparts in law enforcement...

civil liability also.

I think the principle of 'sovereign immunity' may shield Pike or anyone else on the force from criminal liability, but am not sure about that.

Police Officer Lateral Officer - CLOSED $7,290 - $9,073 monthly
The Berkeley Police Department seeks ambitious men and women who desire to build a worthwhile career in the professional police field. Our goal is to have a workforce that reflects the diversity found in the community so that we enhance our ability to understand and respond to a variety of service needs.

Evidently there are Reserve Police Officers' hours ($8), and other Reserve Police Officers' hours ($27.01). I wonder what the .01 is for.

Reserve Police Officer - CLOSED $8.00 - $27.01 hourly
We are currently accepting applications for Police Reserve, which is an hourly position with the City's Police Reserve Unit.

...was not voluntary on his part. And if this is true, the most important outcome has hopefully been achieved. Dismissal for cause, means that he can't just up stakes and sign up as a cop the next county over, as is the case when they are allowed to quietly resign.

Overly wordy "I can confirm"
"unable to comment further"
declining comment

Where is he now is made a non-issue.

Someone or some group who would have ordered this realizes their negligence-or-worse could cost a lot more than a PR firm.

grinding pepper for customers with salads or pasta dishes. Actually anything. No matter what they order he just comes over and grinds pepper and the customer is like "I don't want any pepper!" and he says "Yes you do. Stop resisting! Stop resisting!"

to UC Davis HR

Only ask for things that law allows you to see for certain:

1. Any letter of resignation

2. Any correspondence from his counsel to the department non-lawyers
(there is no privilege)

3.Any agreement reached between him and the univesity reflecting funds paid to settle claims or arbitration proceedings.

4. Any correspondence between the University and outside arbitrators in connection with any appeal filed by guy

5. All warrants and evidence of payment, salary wages, and otherwise made to the guy after ( such and such date)

Under CA law you're not going to get much else
