Elon Musk Says He Has 'Verbal' OK To Build N.Y.-D.C. Hyperloop

Source: NPR

A plan to build an ultrafast Hyperloop One tube train has been given "verbal [government] approval to connect large cities on the East Coast, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk says. He adds that the system would whisk passengers from New York to Washington, D.C., in 29 minutes.

After his tweet about the plan set off intense interest, Musk added a clarification, stating, "Still a lot of work needed to receive formal approval, but am optimistic that will occur rapidly."

We're seeking more details from Musk and his companies that are involved in the Hyperloop project, from the vehicle unit to the Boring Company, which would dig the tunnels. He did not specify, for instance, which agency had given its approval, or when construction might begin.

Engineers who are working on the project have the goal of sending pods through a tube at speeds of more than 700 mph, using magnetic levitation and an electric motor in a vacuum environment.

I think not.

According to Samuel Goldwyn, a verbal agreement is not worth the paper it's written on.
Yogi Berra probably said something like that too.

Heard Al Gore himself speak the words. Elon Musk has a great deal to do with that.

Not why can't we do that in America?

But only as tools to enjoy a much more pastoral world than the one he envisions. High speed transport across the desert? Sure. Between NYC and DC? Not so sure; there's a lot of pretty parts of the country to enjoy.

...but good lord can't we just work on getting the basic, day to day public transit that most people use better before we start throwing money, tax breaks, or whatever the fuck else at supercharged pipe dreams just because they have Elon Musk's name attached to them?

And yes, I realize that Musk saying he has "verbal o.k." is not exactly contracts or anything, but this really does seem like something that are elected officials would get themselves all giddy over.

I saw it a few nights ago, with Al in attendance. Elon Musk is probably the most important person in the world of climate change and technology. Without him, India would not have signed the Paris accords. I won't spoil the movie. His words and his connections carry a GREAT deal of weight.

the information super highway was supposed to promote remote workplaces

everyone was going to Skype

there was insufficient demand for the SST

just because you can build it doesn't mean you should

cost-benefit analyses are based on tweaked assumptions to suit an agenda

it's all about $$$$

there is the available land already punched out of the landscape. You could have stops at highway interchanges.... No need to dig tunnels.. To me that would be a maintenance and construction headache. Above ground continuous structures could be squirted out by the same technology that creates bridge support structures... Just misc ramblings of an idle mind...
