Cecil the lions son killed in a trophy hunt in Zimbabwe, officials say
Source: Bangor Daily News
The son of Cecil the lion Zimbabwes beloved big cat, whose death at the hands of an American trophy hunter triggered widespread outrage two summers ago has been killed as well, according to officials at Hwange National Park.
Officials said Xanda, who was 6 and had several cubs, was fatally shot several days ago by another trophy hunter in Zimbabwe.
We cant believe that now, 2 years since Cecil was killed, that his oldest Cub Xanda has met the same fate, the Facebook group Lions of Hwange National Park said Thursday. When will the Lions of Hwange National Park be left to live out their years as wild born free lions should?
Officials said Xanda was killed during a hunt organized by Richard Cooke Safaris. The group did not respond to a request for comment.

(37,748 posts)Thankfully, I'll never understand the mind of a human who receives pleasure and entertainment from killing an animal. And with even greater thanks, none are in my circle of friends or my family.

(47,209 posts)Apparently they were in the run from a few males for a good year, and then finally came out when the mom / caretakers were ready to mate again. And they're all getting along well. I think he still has two sons left, they should make them off limits to hunters somehow.

(20,148 posts)They don't even have the balls to say they shot or killed the animal. They say they "took" it. They don't say they sawed its head off. They say they "took the trophy". Disgusting.
I had a boss that was a trophy hunter and got hos 3 sons into it too, even though the sons pretty much hated his guts. Saw him verbally abuse his wife once and his mistress ($10Ka month minimum) even dumped him. When he dropped dead of a heart attack at age 51, I was sorry the company shut down and I lost my job, but I wasn't sorry he was gone.

Two years after Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy-hunter in Zimbabwe, prompting global outrage, his son may have met a similar sad end.
Xanda, a six-year-old lion with several young cubs, was reportedly shot on a trophy hunt.
He is said to have died outside the Hwange National Park in northern Zimbabwe.
The lion had been fitted with an electronic tracking collar by Oxford University researchers.

Is it possible safari hunters are actually hoping people will start hunting them, posing with photos as they smirk and leer with the dead ones? Maybe they've been hoping all this time that true competitors will pursue them, and make this a fair game.
I would hope someone can encourage them to get far drunker, along their professional guides, before setting out. They really should be completely in the bag at the beginning of their drive out to slaughter innocent, intelligent creatures struggling to live.

(111,174 posts)for poaching. Luring them off the preserve with food or pheromones should make no difference about that.
That "Safari" company should also be hit with a very large fine.
Maybe they can get them to stop chumming for lions just outside park boundaries that way.

(111,174 posts)when villages report a problem juvenile lion who has been preying on children. Culling them does everybody a favor, especially the village, and maintains employment in areas where it is hard to come by and if some twisted asshole pays a taxidermist to turn the head into a wall trophy, I guess it's that or just letting it rot.
Chumming for preservation lions has got to be stopped. Making it unprofitable is the best way to do that.
