Former CBO Directors To Congressional Leaders: Back Off, We Have A Job To Do

Every former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office wrote to congressional leadership Friday with a simple message: step off.
The office, a frequent punching bag for Republicans amid their repeated failed efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, came under additional scrutiny after a series of failures in the Senate to collect enough votes even to hold a vote on the repeal effort, at least for now.
The undersigned represent every former Director of the Congressional Budget Office, the former officials wrote. We write to express our strong objection to recent attacks on the integrity and professionalism of the agency and on the agencys role in the legislative process.
Congressional Republicans have sent draft bill after draft bill to the CBO in recent weeks, though the resulting analyses have never shown Republicans desired results of expanded care and lower prices.

(37,648 posts)I can't remember which it was. Either the Bush tax cut bill or the Iraq War. I saw a hearing with CBO Director, where he was questioned about the CBO score. He testified that he CHANGED the number, when the head honcho Republican (forget who that was) called him & "requested" a lower number. The Director complied.
The tax cut bill ended up costing the country $1 Trillion Dollars. I think it was the tax cut bill that got the false CBO score.
See, this is why Republican voters don't believe their leaders are corrupt. They don't watch the news or pay attention. Do they even know what their leader from that time, Dennis Hastert, has been up to in recent years? Probably not. Yet, I spotted Hastert as a junk politician and total sham during that era, when I saw him do something on tv that was caught by a secret camera. But you'd have to be watching the news & paying attention to see it.

(1,204 posts)They seem to just be confirming everything any realistic person thought about them before. It seems Trump is just making it so they are more willing to be candid about their desires.
What I am shocked by is how so many of them are willing to follow and defend Trump and Russia. If you told me a year ago that repulicans were siding with Russians and ruskie bintelligence ops while undermining and attacking US intelligence, I'd say you were talking nonsense. It is interesting seeing Republicans defend Russian interference by acknowledging the US does it too and is bad. Something which they often denied. So I guess there is at least that.
