Republicans Embrace Tax Hikes Targeting Democratic States

Source: Associated Press

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER Published JULY 22, 2017 10:20 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans aren’t usually big on raising taxes, but they’re really eager to eliminate the federal deduction for state and local taxes.

Why? A look at the states that benefit the most from the tax break helps explain it – they are all Democratic strongholds. New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and California top the list of states where taxpayers get the biggest deductions. Not a single Republican-leaning state ranks in the top 10.

“Although Republicans usually recoil at any type of tax increase, cutting this tax break would almost be fun for them,” said Martin Sullivan, chief economist for Tax Analysts. “It provides massively disproportionate deductions to high-tax states controlled by Democrats.”

Proposals by House Republican leaders and President Donald Trump would repeal the tax break as part of their packages to overhaul the American tax code. But they are getting a lot of pushback from Republican lawmakers in Democratic-controlled states.

IRS doesn't usually do much at first ... it usually takes them 3-4 years before they file a court case against you for not paying taxes ... then the liens usually don't start for a while after that ... and if you set up a payment plan before they send your case to court, which is usually possible, you can end up avoiding the judgement and the liens, you'll just have penalties for non-payment ... they're not THAT much, either. IIRC around 3-4% a year. Actually a pretty low-cost (what is, in effect, a) loan, if you think about it.

Basically as long as Dump is out in 2020 (Dog Forbid it takes that long to remove him, but ... hopefully worst case is 2020) you could likely avoid giving any of your money to his regime ... but it'll cost you some in penalties.

are 5% a month each, up to 25%. So avoiding taxes entirely costs 50%, plus interest (which is ~3.5% / yr right now, it changes).

In the eyes of Republicans tax hikes are always a bad thing. Because when you can cut taxes and make it sound like a good thing. But a quick reality check will tell us other wise. Take a look at our infrastructure and Kansassistan.

(From the OP)
"The standoff illustrates how hard it is for Congress to eliminate any popular tax break, even one that benefits the ruling party's political opponents."

These slimy, corrupt GOP bastards are truly evil, imo.

It's the only way they survive. If Americans together figure, wait, we own this government and together we can get anything. Together....

If we stopped hating each other for some issues, we're all better off. Scapegoat works really well on the frightened.

Congressional GOP boasts about plan to cut veterans pensions to pay for more doctor's fees under CHOICE.

Congressional GOP boasts about plan to raise taxes on folks employed by some of the most powerful industries in the country like banking (New York) and tech (California).

Congressional GOP boasts about plan to take away the health insurance of tens of millions of Americans.

Once upon a time, this kind of shit would have been concealed in the small print in a 1000 page bill for fear of voter backlash. Congressional Republicans no longer fear the wrath of voters, because they don't think that American voters will ever have a chance to make their voice heard.

Totally agree.

I'm scared shitless about not being able to vote for whom I want to, even in my deep blue, double-Dem majority state of California. Who KNOWS what the ruskies will come up with by 2018 in terms of cyber-hacking, cyber-attacking and being able to disenfranchise Dem voters votes from counting-- even in deep blue states--across this country.

It's not like THIS under-staffed, Department of Homeland Security gives one DAMN about the ruskies potential of interfering into our elections AGAIN, only with feeling this time
