Peruvian university worries Opus Dei behind dispute with Church

(Reuters) - One of Peru's top universities says it thinks maneuvers by the conservative Roman Catholic group Opus Dei are behind the school's high-profile falling out with the Vatican.

In a dispute that could drag Peru and the Vatican into a diplomatic spat, the Catholic Church ordered the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) in a July letter to drop the words "pontifical" and "Catholic" from the official name it has been using for more than 60 years.

The university, which was founded in 1917 and is widely regarded as the country's most progressive institution of higher education, has refused to comply with the order. The Vatican says it will press its case with Peru's foreign ministry.

Vatican representatives say they have spent years trying to persuade the university to comply with Church laws and that a large financial donation the school received should be managed in accordance with those.

No one familiar with Roberts and Alito were surprised when they pushed Citizens United through for corporations to gain full control of government.

They preyed on Catholics in US, too, with the intention of dividing them, and unifying the fun die wing with the fundamentalists of every other denomination in the interests of furthering their neo-fascist political agenda.

4. The vatican has become more delusional about what it can and cannot do.

They may refuse to recognize the PUCP but it will be impossible to stop them calling themselves whatever they want. Next stop, the UN asking for sanctions against Peru. That would be fun to watch.

5. Oh where is King Henry VIII when you need him?

Short answer: Join Church and State together. King Henry VIII did it in a brutal fashion but there should be nothing stopping Peru from threatening to nationalize the Roman Catholic Church in Peru. The Peruvian government can take a step by just claiming ownership of Roman Catholic Church property but letting the church function as is. Of course bolder steps can be taken but since the vast majority of the population are Catholic, doing so would be as big as the Reformation was.
