SAN ANTONIO One of the undocumented immigrants who died in a stifling tractor-trailer here this weekend was a 19-year-old who lived in the United States and graduated from high school in Northern Virginia before apparently being deported to his native Guatemala, according to interviews with government officials and postings on social media.
Frank G. Fuentes was one of at least three Guatemalan nationals on a truck packed with undocumented immigrants and driven by James Matthew Bradley Jr., said Cristy Andrino, the consul of Guatemala in McAllen, Tex. Fuentes previously had lived in Virginia, Andrino said.
The Guatemalan government said Fuentes, who was initially described as 20-years-old, died of heat exposure and asphyxiation. Bradley has been charged with smuggling immigrants for financial gain resulting in death.
A Facebook page belonging to Fuentes, which was getting tagged with condolence messages on Tuesday, said he graduated from J.E.B. Stuart High School in Fairfax County in 2015. A school system official confirmed that a student by that name graduated that year. He was caring and such a friendly person, said fellow Stuart attendee Chris Garcia in a Facebook message. He just wanted to [live] his life here.

(58,785 posts)not worth more than another's, but he had become one of us and should have been safe here.

(8,303 posts)like these people did - I think those responsible should have to answer to murder charges - but if this guy did start committing crimes, only being a born citizen would have prevented his deportation.
I have to admit I agree with that policy - people should not be able to come to the country and then live their lives here as criminals.

Most stupid adolescents get a chance to grow out of it, though, and most do.

(8,303 posts)Even if you are here as a resident with a green card or some sort of visa program - there are tons - allowing you to work, if you commit significant crimes your status changes. You get turfed out. I believe that is so in just about every developed country.
He was DACA (in effect legalized). His DACA renewal was refused because DACA is terminated for criminal behavior or gang activity. Then he was deported. And that would have been true regardless of his status unless he were an American citizen.
These deaths, including his, are tragic and horrifying. But they are not due to abuse of immigrants.

Until we find the story about that arrest, I wouldn't assume anything.

(8,303 posts)And I think that's right, because it came from the Guatemalan consul:

Supposedly simple assault and grand larceny.

He didn't deserve to die this way, but let's face it. That's a violent gang. A violent death of some kind was pretty much inevitable.
I hope other profiles come out about the people that lost their lives. This one was a bad example.

He lived in fairfax county. One article says it was march 2016 arrest. I found this, which mentions that one person was arrested in Virginia for mob assault as part of a nationwide ICE sweep.
