WASHINGTON The Senate majority's No. 2 leader has given President Donald Trump one of the strongest pushbacks from any Republican in Congress this year: Firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions could bring to a halt GOP cooperation with the administration's legislative agenda.
"Well, it's the president prerogative, but he is then going to jeopardize, potentially, his ability to get anything else done here," Majority Whip John Cornyn told reporters Wednesday. "And I don't think that should be his desire or preference."
Cornyn, a former Texas attorney general and justice on the state Supreme Court, said he continues to view Sessions as "doing just a fine job" running he Justice Department and someone who "did the right thing" _ for that sake of his own credibility and that of the departmentby recusing himself from the FBI's investigation into Russian election meddling.
Sessions did so after conceding he had contacts with Russia during the 2016 campaign, when he was a senator from Alabama and one of Trump's most prominent surrogates and political counselors.

(11,253 posts)There's is literally nothing Trump could do to get the GOP Congress to turn on him. He could bite the head off a bat on TV, but so long as he's still able to sign a tax cut into law, they will look the other way.

(12,640 posts)Especially the long-term members. You pretty much have to be a woman or considered a minority (Religious or "racial" ) for the GOP in the Senate not to take an "attack him, you attack us all" position. Even assholes are protected for the most part - a GOP Senate members has to be totally off script and trashing his fellows before they will allow him to bet trashed in public without protection.
Sessions is a good ole boy - a brother; they'll close ranks to protect him.
