Trump: Republicans 'look like fools' if they don't kill Senate filibuster

Source: The Hill

Responding to Senate Republicans' healthcare collapse this week, President Trump said Saturday that Republicans "look like fools" and the Democrats are "laughing" at them if they don't change the legislative process.

He urged Senate Republicans to abolish the legislative filibuster in a series of early-morning tweets, claiming “200 bills” sit in the Senate waiting for action.

* * *
“Republican Senate must get rid of 60 vote NOW! It is killing the R Party, allows 8 Dems to control country. 200 Bills sit in Senate. A JOKE!” Trump tweeted. “The very outdated filibuster rule must go. Budget reconciliation is killing R's in Senate. Mitch M, go to 51 Votes NOW and WIN. IT'S TIME!”

“Republicans in the Senate will NEVER win if they don't go to a 51 vote majority NOW. They look like fools and are just wasting time,” he continued. “8 Dems totally control the U.S. Senate. Many great Republican bills will never pass, like Kate's Law and complete Healthcare. Get smart!"

wait, I was gonna say our democracy would be done, but I said that when McConnell blocked the vast majority of the American public's will when we said we wanted Merrick Garland on the SC

I said that when the KGB hacked our election and stole it

I said that when the so called president kept all interest in his businesses and ran them in the oval office

I said that when it became clear the so called president and most around him were guilty of treason

So never mind, nothing to see here.

And neither did he for that matter. Trump wants to be king and not president. Easy. Just keep tweeting away and it'll happen. Suspend the Constitution and any governing rules in the Congress. Simplify matters by trashing the rule of law and then govern by decree. Any raving lunatic with a 36% approval rating could figure this one out!

Given all that's happened in the last 6 months - and what looks like Trump being at war with the Repugs - they know that 2018 is looming over them and they see a good chance that both the Senate and the House will go Dem. So I don't see McConnell wanting to make that move to please Trump. McConnell knows the precarious position that Trump has place the Repug Party in.

200 bills sit in Senate? Is that like the 300 motorcycle cops that led a Trump motorcade through Chicago? Or is this another Trump exaggeration? Lie?

They have the base to do it.

Senator Collins especially has the full power to cross the aisle and actually would get a surge in support for doing so.

is to try to disband Congress. I know that sounds crazy and conspiracy theory-ish, but look who we're talking about. The Republican Congress made him mad and we can't have that.

On the plus side, only that would hopefully cause Republicans in Congress to finally rebel. I say "hopefully" because nothing is sure with this bunch. They're so used to being sheep that possibly they won't even move to protect themselves.

Feel free to disagree with me here.... I'm of the opinion that at least a few of the somewhat sensible repukes are thankful for still having the filibuster in play so that they won't have to actually vote on some of the crazy shit that 45* is proposing.

"The U.S. government is made up of three co-equal branches -- the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial. The other two serve as a check on the power of the third."

It's not enough that he's packing the Federal courts (100+ positions) with arch-conservatives, now Donnie Two Scoops is trying to tell Congress how to do their work.

This is what happens when you put a CEO in charge of the presidency. He wants to rule by fiat, not democracy.

with 3 times as many judges and Democratic party-appointed judges now control 9 of the 13 circuit courts of appeals (notably after they got rid of the filibuster for confirmations) - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=9383147

Because the Rethugs didn't let them through after they got the Senate majority in 2014. That's after they filibustered every nomination when they were in the minority, until Harry Reid voted to change the rules.

so I expect more were confirmed since then... but there will always be some rolling "backlog" of judges because you will have some retire or leave for other positions or even die in office. I don't think any President will ever completely fill every slot.

Sat Jul 29, 2017, 08:25 PM

given how many Obama WAS able to get to during his 8 years - and what was significant was Obama's literal reshaping of the appellate courts (and notably he focused on getting the D.C. appellate filled up), which were 10-3 conservative and were reversed to 9-4 liberal. If what Drumpf is filling up are the lower court judges, then they still have to hit that appellate court level where cases usually end, since the SCOTUS can only accept a certain number (and remand the rest back). That's why Drumpf's E.O.'s have been killed or neutered, one after another.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-obama-idUSKCN1110BC

And just as Republicans have done for years, Democratic Senators can "blue slip" any nominated individual if that person is from their state, and they object to them... which basically kills the nomination.

The 'repeal the ACA' vote would still have FAILED if they did away with the Filibuster. The 'Skinny Repeal' only needed 50 votes, with Pence breaking a tie to make the vote 51-50. With a Filibuster you need 60 votes to progress.

The Orange Shitgibbon seems to think that without the Filibuster, all it takes is for 1 person to vote for something that tRump wants and it immediately becomes law.

He is just too damn stupid to serve.
