Dem campaign chief vows no litmus test on abortion
Source: The Hill
Democrats will not withhold financial support for candidates who oppose abortion rights, the chairman of the party's campaign arm in the House said in an interview with The Hill.
Rep. Ben Ray Luj n (D-N.M.) said there will be no litmus tests for candidates as Democrats seek to find a winning roster to regain the House majority in 2018.
"There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates," said Luj n, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman. "As we look at candidates across the country, you need to make sure you have candidates that fit the district, that can win in these districts across America."
In taking the position, Luj n and Democrats risk alienating liberals, as well as groups dedicated to promoting access to abortion and reproductive health services that represent the core of the party's base.

(22,941 posts)of abortion rights. If someone thinks it's OK to make all women's reproductive choices contingent upon their personal beliefs, that is not someone I would ever vote for, much less donate to them or support them in other ways. If they don't support women in this area, they are probably bad in other areas as well and basically can't be trusted. I disagree with this.

(16,104 posts)I bet there is a 'litmus test' to disqualify every damn one of them.
Gallup says 48% of Americans believe abortion to be immoral.
You know where that 48% happen to be hanging out together? Yeah, where the winning candidate feels just like them.
Most socially conservative Democrats fall under the category of 'personally immoral but legally settled by the Supreme Court.' Diffuse the issue. It gets a few more votes.
And a few more Democrats. Which is what we want.

(11,686 posts)If he gets in and votes against abortion rights he will also be voting with the many things that the Repukes add into the bill. Which means most if not all of women's rights to choose what they do with their own bodies and access to health care will be limited or taking away completely.

(13,841 posts)Let's take a hypothetical from my backward red state of South Carolina.
If we had a chance to beat Trey Gowdy with a moderate Democrat who, running in a district where polling shows at least a 2 to 1 margin in favor of restricting abortion rights, would you withhold support if that Dem was in favor of some restrictions?
Just saying it might not be a good idea to let perfect get in the way of achievable.

voting for such a woman-hater (regardless of his/her position on other issues) is giving my tacit approval to that person voting against my rights. not gonna happen.

(23,266 posts)and Elmer has stated his opposition to abortion rights, you would vote for the Republican? Or you would simply not vote?
Blue dogs are not the ideal, but if they get us the majority, committee leaderships, etc, I'm voting "D", no matter what.

(23,266 posts)hint: there are no good answers on this hypothetical ballot - only a choice of evils.
I'm in LA and we have a D Governor that opposes abortion, and would probably sign any law to further restrict abortion.
He also expanded Medicaid to 400,000 people, is balancing a budget by forcing the legislature to pass a more progressive tax system, has been great on civil rights other than abortion, set environmental standards, etc.
I'll happily live with him, given the other options were David Vitter or possibly Steve Scalise.

(28,042 posts)The Democratic party will not defend the right of women to make their own medical decisions.
Throwing women under the bus in not the way to win elections.
