The New Jersey Assembly on Monday barred Gov. Chris Christie from using a house at Island Beach State Park during government shutdowns.
The Legislature voted 63-2 with two abstentions to prevent Christie or any future New Jersey governor from using the Island Beach State Park beach mansion during a government shutdown, officials said.
Assemblyman John Wisniewski of Middlesex County proposed the measure July 13 after Christie earned statewide ire when he was photographed sunning himself July 2 with his family on the beach after he shut down state beaches during a budget standoff.

It's a no-brainer.

(36,305 posts)Does Christie have to sign this or can it become law without his signature?
It will be interesting either way.
Even better if he vetoes it.

(35,342 posts)My guess is he won't veto it, since the press will use news of his veto to further ridicule him.
In NJ, if he doesn't sign it, it will become law in 45 days. It will be the law on the date that the law itself specifies.

(10,251 posts)To frame what is acceptable societal behavior and what isnt; humans have rarely ever said everyone is basically good, so let's codify THAT...laws get passes because at least a few of us are, generally, complete amoral asholes to the rest of the Villagers.

(58,785 posts)that came about as a result of conservative abuse. People in both parties abuse their powers, but this is a far, far larger problem on the right, where so many people regard most government functions with contempt and think they have a right to cheat because "everyone does." And also believe the wealthy and elevated should have more right than others and the bottom levels of society should have less.
I've always lived among conservatives and can't remember the number of people who've said right in front of me and others that they've "paid in for years," and since "everyone else" cheats, they're just getting some of their own back. Christie is just one of those elevated far above his level of ethical competence.
Very differently--generally speaking, liberal Democratic officials do really believe in the value of government, came to office with ideals of using their positions to serve the people, and believe in the need to protect it from the destructive effects of cheating. Yes, there's corruption, but far less and seldom to the point of completely abandoning their duty.
In any case, no official should need even explanation that their positions are honors defined by their duties to the citizens, not privileged positions over them.

All residential property owned by the State and provided exclusively or primarily for the use of the Governor, including the Governors ocean house at Island Beach State Park, shall be closed and not available for use by the Governor, the Governors family, or any other person or entity during a state of emergency that is declared, the bill read.
A rep for Christie declined comment.
As always, we have a long-standing policy of not discussing pending or proposed legislation until a final bill reaches our offices and we have had ample time to review it, his spokesman Brian Murray said in an email.
