DCCC apologizes to Sheldon Adelson
Source: Politico
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a public apology Thursday afternoon to billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson for charging that the Republican mega donor was tied to the Chinese mob and a prostitution ring.
In press statements issued on June 29 and July 2, 2012, the DCCC made unsubstantiated allegations that attacked Sheldon Adelson, a supporter of the opposing party. This was wrong. The statements were untrue and unfair and we retract them, the DCCC wrote. The DCCC extends its sincere apology to Mr. Adelson and his family for any injury we have caused.
The statement is an attempt by the Democratic party committee to try and make a potential defamation lawsuit go away.
Adelsons attorneys threatened legal action last month after the DCCC sent out an email June 29 stating that Adelson personally approved of prostitution and knew of other improper activity at his companys properties in the Chinese enclave of Macau, China.

(23,664 posts)I'll bet the statements aren't that far from the truth, but once again, the Dems are bluffed into submission.
I'm pretty sure that Adelson does not want any of this stuff to come out in court. They didn't just pull that statement out their ass.
I mistakenly made a donation to the DCCC some months ago. That won't happen again.

(4,490 posts)Unless they have proof like an email from him, recording, or some other fool proof piece of evidence, it was kind of a stupid thing to say. The way I would have done it is show some of the things that would lead to that conclusion and phrased it in a more suggestive manner rather than flat out saying he is personally running a prostitution ring.

(13,297 posts)Info at the article indicates that Steven Jacobs CEO of the Sands China subsidiary was fired by Adelson in 2010, and it was he who has suggested that Adelson approved of prostitution at the China property for financial reasons.
If anyone knows, it would be him. It may come to light during the wrongful termination lawsuit.
Or maybe someone will get a nice check for everything to just go away.

I would suggest that readers google "triad," "Macao," and "organized crime." I certainly wouldn't want to libel an honest businessman. I'm just sayin'. You might bump into some information about a government that can be bought, and people in the government-buying business. You might bump into some information about the triads infiltrating Macao casinos and the people who, uhh, "do business" with them. The internet is a wonderful thing.

(29,853 posts)(AP) NEW YORK - Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has filed a defamation lawsuit in New York against the National Jewish Democratic Council and top officials, saying they made libelous statements regarding his political contributions.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan seeks $60 million in damages. Adelson is chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp. and donates to Republican campaigns.
The lawsuit alleges the Washington-based Council said Adelson personally approved of prostitution in resorts owned by Sands China Limited, a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands. The suit accuses the Council of "assassinating" Adelson's character.
The Council said its reports referenced mainstream press accounts and were "wholly appropriate."
The press accounts described claims by a fired former Sands China executive. Adelson has denied the claims.

Every dollar the DCCC spends defending itself from a lawsuit is one less dollar available to elect Democrats to the House. They knew that this guy was going to sue, and decided to do the smart thing. Thank God!
The National Jewish Democratic Council would have been wise to have followed the DCCC's lead on this.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
There's no discourse here.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Aug 3, 2012, 04:41 AM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: It's not clear who this cursing is directed towards. The DCCC? Sheldon Adelson? The OP? In any case, it doesn't seem very conducive to productive discussion. Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: OMG! potty mouth! meh. Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Not sure if the "fuck you" is to the OP or the DCCC. If the former, then "HIDE" would be in order. But, it is unclear, so I will err on the side of caution. Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Appropriate, considering the situation. Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Meh. He has point.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Sure, Democrats want to embarrass Adelson - who may become the single largest Republican donor this year - by repeating scandalous allegations contained in a lawsuit filed by a dismissed employee, alleging that Adelson conscienced prostitution in his Macau casinos. Thus, Chinese prostitution money was flowing to Republican coffers, they said. snip
But those charges are still being litigated. So let's confine ourselves to the well-known things Democrats could have pointed out about Adelson.
For example, Adelson has elected not to sign a contract with the Culinary union, which is his right. But Adelson went further: When the Culinary staged a pre-opening protest at The Venetian, the casino's staff demanded police arrest demonstrators, and when officers refused, Sands sued. A federal judge determined the sidewalks outside Strip casinos are public forums, but Sands appealed that ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court before being rebuffed. snip
More in the article about Adelson being sued by former driver and security detail for stiffing them.
