Houston: We won't check immigration status at shelters
Source: The Hill
The City of Houston said Tuesday that officials won't ask for immigration status or documents at shelters for victims displaced by Tropical Storm Harvey. "WE WILL NOT ASK FOR IMMIGRATION STATUS OR PAPERS AT ANY SHELTER," the city's official Twitter account tweeted, before repeating the same message in Spanish. <snip> Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) promised Monday that he would represent any immigrant that faces deportation after seeking assistance during and after the storm. "I and others will be the first ones to stand up with you," Turner said at a press conference. "If you need help and someone comes and they require help, and then for some reason, then somebody tries to deport them, I will represent them myself, okay?" 4. Is not Houston a bit of a Progressive Bastion..
Perhaps this is playing out with this decision.
Would this have happened if this was in Dallas? Not Sure.. |

6. Dallas County is bluer than Harris County!
Where people interact each day and get accustomed to tolerance and diversity, they tend to vote Democratic (for some reason).

7. I read that your mayor is a lesbian.
At least that is what Anne Coulter said and I always believe her and Kellyanne.

10. I know that but apparently Anne doesn't. I read it on a DU post earlier and laughed.

11. Yes, Annise Parker is a lesbian. She was a good mayor
and I hope she gets back into politics. Unfortunately, we have term limits.
Our new mayor, Sylvester Turner, is doing a great job IMHO. He ran for mayor several times in the past, starting in 1991 and I felt he wasn't ready. But he's served in the Texas House of Representatives for several years, including on the state budget commitee. I felt he was ready this time around and I was happy to vote for him. |
