Okla. fires: dozens of homes burn, evacuations

Source: AP-Excite

By TIM TALLEY

LUTHER, Okla. (AP) - Several wildfires raging around the parched Oklahoma landscape prompted more evacuations on Sunday as emergency workers sought to shelter those forced out by flames that destroyed dozens of homes and threatened others in the drought-stricken region.

One roaring fire near Luther, about 25 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, destroyed nearly five dozen homes and other buildings before firefighters gained a measure of control Saturday. Authorities said several state roads remained closed early Sunday because of drifting smoke or nearby fires.

Mike Donegan, a communications supervisor with the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol in the scorched region, said evacuations continued overnight. He had no immediate details on the numbers forced from their homes but said officers went door to door in some communities, getting people to leave.

He said he saw thick smoke from a distance of about 50 miles from one of the fires as he drove into work.

This has nothing to do with global warming, we all know it is god punishing Oklahomans for being so republican.

Sorry, my empathy impulse seems to be wearing thin these days with these types. Can't stand to see money go to help people out until THEY need it.

You don't even know who these people are. Some of them are artists and such who live outside of town but go ahead and laugh at other's misfortune. That's what the internet was invented for after all. The complete expression of every ugly sentiment known to man.

People will shit on their neighbors' heads without any regard for their situation or feelings and then cry like babies when they are in need and don't get what they want.

In other news, isn't this morning nice? A little drop in the temperature and some cool northern breeze and it's almost bearable. I hope it helps the firefighters.

Last night I went outside and there was a thick haze in the air I could see and smell. There are fires all around me to the north, south, east and west and things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. I am a proud Okie democrat and I don't rejoice when my republican neighbors houses and possessions burn. I believe in global warming and I see the real world results of it going on around my home state. Some of the above posts are mean spirited and not in keeping with the values I hold as a democrat and a human being. You guys might think about what you say before you lump everyone in a state together or just try not to be such dicks about tragedies regardless of who it happens to.

and it's a little bit harder to be an outspoken democratic Okie than it is in some other states. But by being one, I have converted several former republicans onto our team and this election looks like there are going to be a few more, especially women who are sick and tired of being treated like biblical property by right wing republicans.

It was nice this morning (only in the high eighties) so I mowed part of my 3 acre yard. The 5 acre pasture is going to have to wait. My chickens are tired of this heat and so am I.

Take Care fellow Okie.
