Antigua Spared The Worst By Hurricane Irma

Source: Antigua Newsroom

Residents are waking up to the news that Antigua has been spared the worst by Hurricane Irma.

Although higher wind speeds were recorded on Barbuda there have been no reports of deaths. But the situation on Barbuda is not as clear since communication to the sister island has been disrupted.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne wrote on his Facebook a page that the country has a lot to be thankful for.

“Thank God for his mercies and blessings. He has protected and spared us from the worst of Irma. Thank God that there are no fatalities nor, hurricane casualties reported up to this time,” the prime minister said.

1. Seems premature to say the preliminary report is damage in Barbuda is "minimal"

when they haven't heard from the island for several hours, and the last they heard before the height of the storm was several buildings damaged.

2. I'll never understand people that say "Thank God for his mercies and blessings."

If there was a god, then couldn't he have dissipated the storm entirely? Or shifted it far far away? What's with thanking some all powerful entity for having only a minor disaster?

If I believed in a god, wouldn't be better to say "Hey, fuck you god for letting this happen when you had the power to stop it"?

4. pays to build out of concrete, painted cinder block walls. sweep water out & it dries out.

I'm not an engineer, I don't understand why drywall is used to build house inside walls.

people here flooded by 50 inches of rain in a week- get a little bit of water inside their homes and that stuff absorbs the water & crumples into stinking piles of heavy wet chalk.

whatever flooring they have is impossible to dry, hardwoods, linoleum tile, hardwoods-is trashed.

it's cheap and easy to finish, but mainly because it deadens sound between rooms and from the outdoors through outside walls. There's just no viable alternative cheap enough for the mass housing market that has similar acoustic properties.

10. sand?/light airy rock like lava?sandwiched between 2 sheets of (fireproof)recycled plastic material?

sounds inexpensive and strong/water resistant/sound proof to me frame boards made out of molded recycled plastics. roofing shingles as well.

Our new Houses are built like crap these days and way over priced. It just sucks to carry buckets of stinking-toxic chalk/plaster out of homes.

One of the biggest problems is water entering the spaces between studs, where mold will form very quickly. Unless you built walls with totally sealed stud spaces, water will enter no matter what covering you use. Further, your wall covering would need to be completely impermeable and non-absorbent to water to prevent mold from forming inside the material.

At least with today's common materials, it's just an impossible task to do economically. Even if one could afford it using waterproof materials, you probably would enjoy living in it. Humans tend to like warm and cushy things, most of which are absorbent.

5. that's because Irma passed north of Anigua

it would be vastly different story if Irma passed south of the island.

The question is: how did Anguilla do?
