UPDATE 1:05 p.m.
President Donald Trump agreed to a request from congressional Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and extend government funding through Dec. 15, according to sources familiar with a meeting he held Wednesday with congressional leaders. The package would also include relief funding for victims of Hurricane Harvey.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Congressional Democrats are turning the screws on the president and GOP leaders, who need Democratic votes to raise the debt limit and avert a default.
Democratic leaders said Wednesday they'll offer Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump their votes for a package delivering aid to victims of Hurricane Harvey and raising the debt ceiling only until mid-December. GOP leaders, eager to avoid multiple contentious votes on the debt ceiling, want to raise the debt ceiling through late 2018.
The offer for a short-term debt limit increase, outlined in a joint statement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, threatens to upend plans to tie the debt ceiling increase with a disaster relief package.

House approves $7.85 billion in Harvey relief, Trump sides with Democrats over length of debt limit hike
By Mike DeBonis, Kelsey Snell and Elise Viebeck September 6 at 1:03 PM
Breaking: President Trump wants Congress to pass a three-month government spending bill and raise the debt ceiling for the same amount of time, siding with Democrats and putting Republican leaders in an awkward position.
Trump made his position clear at a White House meeting with congressional leaders on Wednesday.
The White Houses position was confirmed in a statement from Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
In the meeting, the President and Congressional leadership agreed to pass aid for Harvey, an extension of the debt limit, and a continuing resolution both to December 15, all together, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a joint statement. Both sides have every intention of avoiding default in December and look forward to working together on the many issues before us.

(37,648 posts)And it's not Trump's decision, is it? He could veto it, sure, but it's the decision of the House of Rep, isn't it? The house that holds the purse strings? Does this mean that Paul Ryan has already agreed?
So the Dems are offering to do what they always do, in exchange for something everyone wants to do: the disaster relief. ????

(13,417 posts)He doesn't have 218 Republicans who will vote for a debt limit increase so he needs Dem votes. I doubt Ryan even has 100 Repub votes. So Pelosi can play hardball. Ryan has to offer concessions to pass the bill or he and his party can suffer all of the ramifications from a government default.
That's the price he pays when dealing with his hardline, ignorant caucus while doing the bidding of his business leader puppet masters in order to protect America.

(59,501 posts)We are the party that believes in government; they are the party that ranges between thinking government a necessary evil and those who just thing it evil.
Unlike the Republicans, we do not want government payments and programs to stop. Doing so hurts people and hurts the states. What we got was the Republican to adopt a continuing resolution, which I think means that everything continues to be funded as it was in the last budget when the budget ends. They also raised the dept ceiling to the amount anticipated to last through December.
What this does is take a huge amount of pressure off of Democrats to get a budget approved. Consider if there were no continuing resolution, there would be more pressure on them to settle. This likely was negociated between Ryan and Pelosi. The leverage Pelosi has is totally due to some RW congressmen who do not want to ever vote to increase the debt limit. That means Ryan can not pass it without help from Pelosi -- who is a pretty good negotiator!
As to Trump victory, he has agreed to possibly keeping spending for all the things in the last Obama budget at the level then funded. If he wants to think this a victory, more power to him. Not to mention, Obama got the Republicans to agree as well.
