Anthony Weiner, the former congressman and New York mayoral candidate whose career and personal life were wrecked in a series of sexting scandals, blamed a deep sickness combined with the profit-seeking curiosity of his 15-year-old victim for his legal troubles, as he asked a judge for leniency when hes sentenced later this month.
Weiner pleaded guilty in May to sending sexually explicit messages to the North Carolina girl, admitting to a single criminal count of transmitting obscene material to a minor. The guilty plea capped a stunning downfall that played a major role in the final days of the 2016 presidential election.
The high-school girl, referred to only as Jane Doe, or JD, contacted Weiner in hopes of selling her story to a publisher and influencing the presidential election, lawyers for Weiner said in a court filing late Wednesday.
JD first contacted Anthony on Twitter on the night of January 23rd, announcing herself as a huge fan, they said in the filing. Unbeknownst to Anthony, JD was looking for material for a book -- one she has now written and is shopping to publishers.

UPDATE:
Anthony Weiner: I 'crushed the aspirations' of Huma Abedin
By EMILY GOLDBERG 09/14/2017 09:01 AM EDT
Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner told a judge that he "crushed the aspirations" of his wife, long-time Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, while asking to be spared of a prison sentence for sending lewd text messages to a 15-year-old girl.
In his letter to Judge Denise L. Cote, the former Democratic congressman for New York and mayoral hopeful expressed remorse for his actions and regret for the harm it inflicted on his now estranged wife. Abedin filed for divorce from Weiner in May.
"I am so deeply sorry for the harm I have done to her, and I live with the sorrow that I will never be able to fix that," he wrote, according to the New York Times.
The FBI investigation into Weiner's actions inadvertently caused the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server to be re-opened after investigators found potentially relevant material on Weiner's computer in October.
"And the one perfect thing in my life my son will forever have to answer questions about the public and private failings of his father. My regret keeps me awake at night and fills me with fear from the moment I awaken," Weiner wrote.

(11,518 posts)Hell, really, it's pretty damned stupid to send explicit photos at all (especially if your career is politics). But this wasn't even between consenting adults - DAMN ANTHONY, HOW STUPID CAN YOU GET? And the part about blaming a high school girl for his problems, yeah, right.

(3,433 posts)It may explain behavior but it does not excuse. Addicts must accept the consequences of their actions just like everybody else.
He's still in the denial phase or he's looking for a way out. I seen this far too often both with myself and others

(63,199 posts)As a general rule, if you don't want to wind up in a book about seeking sexual contact with a minor, don't seek sexual contact with minors.

I doubt jail alone will cure this serious behavior problem but the shock of having to actually do some time might jolt him into getting this condition under control.

So disappointing. He used to be a good Democrat and people here had high hopes for him.

(12,882 posts)Weiner was applauded here (on DU) almost every day. Applauded for the fiery way he would make a mockery of the Right's daily dip-shittedness - the way he shoved FOX's crap right down their throats. What a hero he was here - a Democrat with a visible, fire-breathin' SPINE! A Dem who perforated GOP folly every time he spoke - and all here loved it.
I'm not his defender and I sure wouldn't be sending photos of my "junque" to ANY ONE. I just find it curious how Anthony went from hero to half wit over a bulge in his shorts. Without even trying, I can remember at least FOUR Presidents that were involved with more women than they were married to - WHILE they were in office!
Yeah, Anthony's a schmuck........ now. But I'd sure like to see another Rep with his zeal and verve when speaking and doing for the American people. There's none such now or on the horizon.

(52,155 posts)I'm not giving Weiner ANY slack for what he's done or who he's done it with, but have you (allowed yourself to) look at how some young ladies try so hard to look "grown up"? Forget how easily one could misjudge age via an image on an iPhone! For that matter, how many young girls carry copies of their birth certificate with them?
I don't know if you've ever noticed, but guys and gals oft times interact on the strength of mutual attraction (chemistry) alone. I've been happily, faithfully wed for 30+ years now, but there was a time I WAS looking for prospective interaction with a person of the opposite sex (not that there's anything wrong with that). Each time I got the courage up to approach a prospect - you're not gonna believe this - I didn't pull out my wallet and present my credentials - nor did I ask for theirs. I'm not hinting that I MAY have had any lewd encounters with a minor - I'm just saying that I believe a person could be fooled as to age of someone they found attractive. I find it equally ugly that Weiner did this sort of thing while married.

Are you blaming, even in a small way, the "young lady" ? Emotionally compent adult men are responsible for their own actions. He took the picture, he sent the picture on, he knew/knows that that action is skeevy behavior that is outside of emotionally healthy adult male behavior. He knew that behavior would hurt his wife, again and he did it anyway.

(12,882 posts)No different than an alcoholic twisting the cap off a bottle after having resisted for a length of time. It's the same as the opioid debacle that's sweeping the country. You CAN'T apply normal logic to it. There's AWE and there's LAW regarding such, but it's an addiction. Look it up.
As to the girl - where were her parents with guidance and monitoring? Parenting is a tough job today - moreso than it's ever been. IF she's technically a minor, then her parents/guardians are responsible for her actions.
