Georgia Tech Student-Activist Shot Dead by Campus Police

Source: NBC News

An engineering student who was also an LGBTQ activist was shot and killed by Georgia Tech campus police on Saturday night, officials said Sunday.

The school identified the victim as Scout Schultz, 21, a fourth year engineering student from Lilburn, Georgia, who police said was armed with a knife. They made contact with him outside of a campus parking garage after they received a 911 call at 11:17 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The original call reported that Schultz was also carrying a gun, officials said.

In a video taken by a witness, Schultz can be heard yelling "Shoot me!" at police, as they tell him to drop the knife.

Fascinating stuff....

"Ugh I wish they hadn't shared their deadname 😕 I haven't seen any other reports that do- just for future reference it's not ok to use a trans person's deadname (the name they were given at birth but have since changed) unless they give permission & its super common to deadname or misgender trans people after death. They were doing pretty good until they felt it necessary to do that- it's very strange and voyeuristic to point that out when if they had wanted to use that name they wouldn't have changed it. We don't need to know that."

Deescalate. Back off. Your lives are not in danger, officers. You may have to shoot to protect others......but killing because someone doesn't follow your orders isn't right.

The next video after this one resulted in an aggressive officer being shot. He wouldn't have been had he backed off and asked for help and the subject of this thread would also be ok.

Shitty training. It doesn't have to be this way. It shouldn't........and the lawyers will make the best of it right up until the insurance companies demand standards that minimize these incidents.

Sad to say.

...At least two students shared cellphone video showing the tense interaction between Schultz and Georgia Tech police officers, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Schultz yells at police to shoot and officers respond, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!" more than a dozen times.

"Nobody wants to hurt you,” an officer can be heard saying. “Drop the knife."

A multipurpose tool found on the ground is believed to be the knife Schultz held. The tool did not show an extended blade.

Anyway, as far as I can determine, this was the first time any Tech police officer has ever fired a weapon in the line of duty. It's a sad day for the entire Tech community, I really really wish this incident would have ended differently.

Did he really charge at them? Shoot a warning shot, shoot the legs; Shooting To Kill just to make sure doesn't always seem prudent.

And telling someone to drop the knife 12-13 times doesn't mean time to execute. "Nothing left that I can do, I'm off in 20 mins". Try telling them 15 times.

Center mass aiming point, largest target on the body. A warning shot is rarely utilized, as officers (individuals, too) are responsible for every round they fire. A warning shot (which is also deadly force) may ricochet into someone else. Shooting at the legs is difficult, and can be as deadly as a center chest hit if the artery is struck. Also, police aren't always "gun types". I have seen some horrible targets on police/corrections ranges. Local police chief years ago was happy that he only missed the silhouette 3 times at 25 yards.
